HRM Pro Plus without wearing watch - Cadence/Steps in timed activity?

I have a couple questions regarding the HRM Pro Plus capabilities when starting a timed activity with the watch (FR955 in my case), but not wearing the watch.

  1. In a timed activity without wearing the watch, is it possible to capture any step/cadence data with the HRM Pro Plus when:
    1. the watch is out of ANT+ range?
    2. the watch is in ANT+ range?

One of the primary reason I bought the HRM Pro Plus to go with my new FR955 was because I thought I could capture steps in addition to HR when wearing the HRM by itself (in a timed activity - playing basketball). But, it looks like I was mistaken as the Garmin webpage says the "The Store and Forward feature will only provide heart rate data."

I tried it for the first time today using the Basketball activity and see that I got speed/pace data, but I'm not sure if that was because the watch was in ANT+ range or not (need to experiment more). I haven't had any success getting steps/cadence with other activities. Any thoughts?

From what I've read the standalone HRM will capture step/HR data in an untimed activity, so it seems the hardware capabilities are there...

  • I am looking also for an option to use the HRM dual with my phone sans watch. I have been able to pair it to Apple Watch and use the ismoothrun app and believe it is working. It would be ideal to use the fitness app and chest strap or since it connects to my phone how I can get the data pushed through ismoothrun on the phone or strava… anyone have luck with this?

  • You should be able to pair the HRM Dual directly to your phone through Bluetooth, just like any other Bluetooth HR strap.
