New HRM-Dual doesn't report heart rate

I bought a HRM Dual that is paired to my Instinct 2 Solar. I've successfully been able to pair the monitor to my watch, but when I turn off my wrist heart monitor and wear the chest HRM Dual, it doesn't report heart rate. Sometimes it works for about 5 seconds after putting the strap on, but then stops and doesn't come back.

I've tried:

  • Repairing the HRM with the watch
  • Restarting the watch and re-pairing
  • ANT+T and Bluetooth
  • I've tried taking out the battery of the HRM and starting again
  • I've tried tightening and loosening the straps on the HRM
  • I've tried wetting the strap of the HRM
  • I've tried warming up with the device on

Nothing helps. Is it common for such erratic reporting of the device, or have I got a dud?

  • OK, I think I might understand the issue now, but would appreciate clarification.

I believe that the HRM Dual will only report heart rate when doing an activity or directly viewing your heart rate in the heart rate app? In other words, it won’t passively report heart rate like the wrist sensor?

I say this, as when I go into the heart rate app within my watch, it begins to report my heart rate normally. When I exit back out of the app to the main watch face, I notice the heart rate continues for a moment or two, then stops again.

This would lead me to believe that the watch relies on the wrist sensor for passive HR monitoring then moves over to the chest strap when doing an activity.

If this is correct, I’m not sure why this isn’t made clearer as it’s very counter intuitive.

  • Correct. External sensors work only during timed activities.
