HRM sensitive to knocks?

Hi,

I've recently returned to wearing a chest HRM as i'm paying more attention to heart rate training zones.

Yesterday my heart rate seemed very high for a steady 10:20 mi/mile run.

I have three theories:

1) My fitness is down

2) I've had some minor respitory issues - would that push heart rate up?

Finally.

3) I've been wearing a running vest - this is like a back pack but with a pouch on the front that holds my phone. It's been really good, but the phone does bounce around with the elasticity of the vest. This part of the vest is directly on top of the HRM.

So, i guess my real question is - Is the HRM sensitive to knocks (e.g. the phone bashing into it) or does all the data come from what it picks up from the sensors attached to my skin?

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance.

  • It's quite possible that your vest bouncing on the HRM is affecting it's ability to read the heart rate. The HR data does come from the strap sensors measuring voltage differences on your skin, but the bouncing may affect how well the sensors' contact your skin. (Theoretically it's not impossible that the phone's radio emissions could also affect the sensors, but I have no idea if this is something the could happen in real life.)

  • Thanks I did wonder this, it would make sense. It's a shame that the vest is the best solution i've found for carrying a phone :-) I will try a similar workout without the vest and see what happens.

  • I've been really happy with this: https://www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/adv-skin-lc11656.html#color=78226

Works well with phone at the back and a soft water bottle on the front (if needed). And there's still room for a something more.

(Although with the belt I had a similar problem to yours when I still had a Running dynamics pod instead of HRM Pro+, the pod attaches to the back of the trousers. Slight smile )
