What's your experience/thoughts on the Tempe sensor?

Hi All.  I have a few questions after reading the forum. I would pair this with my Epix 2 (non-pro) watch. I called Garmin support and the person wasn't very familiar with it.  So a few questions:

1. After the workout is over, do I see the lowest temp recorded in an activity on Garmin Connect app?  Or will it show me a graph for all temps recorded during the activity?

2. If I'm not in an activity, can I just do a spot temp check and it would show me somewhere on the watch or in GC app?

3. I've read quite a few posts about constant disconnects when paired to a watch.  Have you had this issue?  Folks say it's takes about 10 minutes to "settle down" until a stable connection.

I plan on storing this device in my car.  So it will already "be cold" for winter activities.  If I leave it in my house before I run, I'm thinking it will throw readings off.  Perhaps take some time to "cool down" to match the actual ambient temp outside.

Thanks!

  • Any watch in range sees it so it works with more than one at a time

Just pair it with both watches.

  • I use it with a S-Biner #3 clip

    I like this...

  • Easy to attach, remove, or move out of direct sunlight.  I recall someone else that used velcro to attach it to the underside of the bill on their cap, which pretty much kept it in the shade.

  • I also am happy with my Tempe. One thing that I like (and hasn't been mentioned here, I think) is the min+max temp of the last 24 hours, that the Tempe remembers internally. When doing overnight hikes, it's really nice to be able to see in the morning how cold the night was.

  • Right, I forgot about that!

  • Also have put them in a food cooler while camping to check temp inside.

  • I recently purchased the Garmin Tempe sensor. It has been really frustrating. It doesn't work very well at all. The unit won't stay connected to the watch. I believe there is a design issue with the battery holder or contacts. If I manually hold the battery in place against the back, it works just fine. However, if I place it in the holder it is very inconsistent. It will work for a second, then stop, then work again, then stop again, and so on (all while moving the sensor). I tried a brand new battery with the same results. Does anyone know of an alternative external ANT+ temp sensor? I really would like one, but I'm concerned that there is some flaw with the current unit offered by Garmin.

  • My experience has been great.  You might have a bum unit.  I'd try exchanging for a new one.

Does anyone know of an alternative external ANT+ temp sensor?

    Not aware of another source.

  • What do you mean by saying "it works for a second, then stop..."? Tempe only updates and sends its temperature once in a minute or so, so I can't see how you can follow the connection second by second?

  • I'm not quite sure I understand what you're experiencing, but here are some possibilities:

    • The Tempe is only connected to the watch while you're on the watch's connected sensors screen, or within the temperature glance widget, or within an activity. It's not connected at all otherwise. So maybe what you describe is just the widget timing out?
    • The Tempe only pings the watch once per minute. It doesn't maintain a continuous connection like Bluetooth or like an ANT+ heart rate monitor.
    • If the battery really just isn't being held in place properly by the casing of your Tempe, then you must have a broken or defective Tempe. By design, the Tempe holds the battery very tightly in place, with or without the clip.
