What's your experience/thoughts on the Tempe sensor?

Hi All.  I have a few questions after reading the forum. I would pair this with my Epix 2 (non-pro) watch. I called Garmin support and the person wasn't very familiar with it.  So a few questions:

1. After the workout is over, do I see the lowest temp recorded in an activity on Garmin Connect app?  Or will it show me a graph for all temps recorded during the activity?

2. If I'm not in an activity, can I just do a spot temp check and it would show me somewhere on the watch or in GC app?

3. I've read quite a few posts about constant disconnects when paired to a watch.  Have you had this issue?  Folks say it's takes about 10 minutes to "settle down" until a stable connection.

I plan on storing this device in my car.  So it will already "be cold" for winter activities.  If I leave it in my house before I run, I'm thinking it will throw readings off.  Perhaps take some time to "cool down" to match the actual ambient temp outside.

Thanks!

    Both.

    2. If I'm not in an activity, can I just do a spot temp check and it would show me somewhere on the watch or in GC app?

There is a temperature widget that will display the current temperature and the highest/lowest in the last 24hr.  The Tempe will have to be in range of the watch for this to work.

    3. I've read quite a few posts about constant disconnects when paired to a watch.  Have you had this issue?  Folks say it's takes about 10 minutes to "settle down" until a stable connection.

I have not seen any of these issues.

  • 1. Both.

    3. I never experienced disconnects. The "10 minutes to settle down" statement was surely about temperature reading, and not connection stability. If you move the sensor from one environment to another with a different ambient temperature, then indeed it takes several minutes for the tempe to indicate the new ambient temperature. It has nothing to do with connection stability.

One other thing to be aware of: Contrary to other garmin sensors, the tempe does not transmit in 1-second intervals. The interval is much longer for the tempe, so it usually takes a while for the sensor to connect. I never did a precise timing, but in my case I usually have to wait 10-30 seconds for the first reading to appear.

  • the tempe sensor transmits once every 1 minute

  • Thanks gor the replies. For sure this was an impulse buy. It was only $30 on Amazon. Perhaps the cheapest thing with a garmin logo. I'm sure I'll destroy it within a week and/or the novelty will soon wear off.

  • If you guys use Strava, when it uploads the activity does it include the ambient temp from the Tempe?

  • You've gotten some good answers, I'll just add thoughts and details.

    • Temperature is not recorded except within an activity. So you can't see any temperature readings in Garmin Connect except within activities that used the Tempe.
    • Likewise, you can't see historical Tempe recordings on the watch. You can just check the current temperature reading by going to the temperature glance widget and waiting for the Tempe to connect. Or you can see temperature readings within an activity you are currently recording if you set up the data fields that way.
    • Most activities do not by default record temperature, even if you have a paired Tempe. Be sure to go into each individual activity profile for which you want to record the temperature, and turn on the recording. I have it turned on for outdoor activities (except water activities) and off for indoor activities, but just be sure to set it the way you prefer.
    • Also, most activities don't show temperature as a default data field, so add it if you like. You don't have to add the temperature data field in order to record temperature - that's the separate setting I mention above.

I like the Tempe, and use it for all outdoor activities (except in the water). It helps to use the Temperature glance widget to connect to the Tempe right before starting an activity, otherwise it can be a minute behind. Sometimes it takes a little while to first connect, but for me it always stays connected once it connects within an activity. I also like to set the Temple outside a few minutes before I go out to start an activity.

  • Another question.  I'm currently testing out the Instinct 2X watch.  I plan on using it at the same time as my Epix on an upcoming activity.  Can I pair the one sensor to both watches?  Or no, just one at a time?

  • Can I pair the one sensor to both watches?

Yes.  I have multiple watches and multiple Tempes.  All my watches are paired to all of my Tempes.  If you use both your watches during the same activity, they will both record the temperature during that activity.

  • I've had a Tempe for about 8 years, used it with a bunch of different Garmin watches, and never had an issue, other than the battery running low - the battery lasts about a year.  It updates every minute and can take a minute or two for the watch to see it.  It never sleeps and sends data 24/7.

I didn't like attaching it to a shoe as it could be impacted by the temperature of the pavement or lost, so I use it with a S-Biner #3 clip (it was about $1US at Home Depot) and attach it in a good place - zipper, belt loop, etc.
