HRM Pro Plus with Fenix5: inaccurate indoor distance

Hi!

I've just came back from indoor basketball game and I can see diferences between distances of my device (HRM Plus Pro with Fenix5) ca. 2km and my brother device (HRM Plus Pro with Fenix6) ca. 6km. I assume his result is more accurate as my firend device showed about 6km ditstance too.

Whats wrong with my device measure and how to improve accuracy?

Additionaly, as I got Fenix5 I had to add two sensors - HR and FP according to this instructions: https://support.garmin.com/nb-NO/?faq=gYnJvprwBy6cIWl1WTwzr7

Best regards,

k

  • HRM Pro estimates the indoors distance from your body movements assuming that you are running. Basketball doesn't include that much conventional running, so it's no wonder the results differ a lot from person to person. And there may be some filtering done by the watch as well, and that depends on the watch model. But I would call any distance measured by the HRM Pro during basketball to be suspect, regardless of what it says. Slight smile

  • Assuming that my indoor activity (basketball) is like running in line from one place to other and then going back the same line, there's a lot conventional running :) I don't predict results to be very precise, but come on, 4km difference is huge, isn't it?

    Any other suggestions?

  • What I meant was, how long are those running sprints in basketball? It's quite possible (and even likely) that there are thresholds on how many steps you have to take before the HRM Pro (and/or the watch) register that sprint as "running" and include in the distance. The 4 km difference in huge, but that just highlights how unreliable it is to use a sensor and algorithm designed for running for another sport. The HRM Pro manual itself says: "The heart rate monitor provides running pace and distance when GPS is not available, such as during treadmill running."
