HRM-Pro Plus no Respiration Rate, pulse at least 20-30 beats higher

After the running activity I found that there was no Respiration Rate recorded, the pulse was at least 20-30 higher than normal. When I went uphill, the pulse rate dropped, but when I ran downhill, the pulse rate increased. I felt good the whole time. Absolutely ridiculous. My pulse is 99% between 120 and 140 when the heart rate monitor is working fine. The battery is new and the watch is an Enduro 2. I wonder why this is happening? I wouldn't write here but it happens to me very often. A colleague who has had an HRM-Tri (+Fenix 6x) for a few years has no problems.

  • In my experience, when respiration rate is not recorded, the cause is that the strap is not connected and there is no HRV data available to the watch. i.e. your pulse is coming from the wrist HRM instead of the strap, for whatever reason.

This theory might also be backed up by the wrong pulse values, which looks like they could come from cadence lock instead of heart rate.

  • Thanks. I read this article about Cadence lock and now it all makes sense to me.

    https://runningwritings.com/2021/05/cadence-lock-why-gps-watches-have-hard.html

Apparently I have a problem connecting my watch to my belt via ANT. I'll try connecting the watch to the belt via bluetooth to see if I have fewer cases like this.

  • I was looking forward to it too soon. After a few days, when I switched on BTL, the breathing measurement problems reappeared, and as a consequence the measured pulse rate was higher (illogical values, the more I rested, the higher the pulse rate I had, when I sat down it showed me 190 beats). I have no more ideas. I will throw the heart rate belt in the trash and I will not track my pulse anymore, because it's all ridiculous.

  • To get the full metrics from HRM Pro or Pro plus You must connect it via ANT

  • I been experience this with my epix with 2 separate hrm pro plus.  ( missing respiration data gaps and spikes in HR )

this is also causing my Lactate threshold guided test not to work or update since feb ( 5 months ago )

any update on your situation ?

  • I have now been wearing the Polar H10 for 2 days and it works fine (pulse between 120-140). This time I have tightened the belt a lot and started wearing it higher than before (3 cm higher). I also wet the belt under the water tap before use and wet my skin.

The HRM Pro Plus and Polar Verity still don't work as well as they should.

Maybe the trick is to tighten the belt really hard, only then it's not comfortable anymore. Maybe the solution is to wear it higher. Two days is not enough to come to any conclusions.

The worst thing is that wrong measurements ruin all your other calculations, just like in your case. Garmin should make it so that if there are illogical pulse measurements, you can remove those results and have the load and everything else recalculated.

  • I been trying to wear it very tight and it still happens. completely soaked.  even lick the 2 sensor pads and  at tighest ( shortest ) possible on hrm pro plus.

I was thinking to try bluetooth mode ( lose running dynamics ) but I saw you tried that and still dont have complete respiration data.  Might try go bluetooth today and see how it goes here

I even tried electro gel on it.  It seems sometimes can help but still can have gaps.  I looked at my earlier running datas ( I have about 1 year of hrm data)
it seems when my watch was on higher firmware I was getting full respiration data ( no skips)  I am wondering if it is watch firmware related.  I have tried two HRM pro plus so far( I tho my first one went bad and got another  to try)

I also have not receive any lactate threshold update from my runs with hrm pro plus since feb this year.  ( and my pace has increased a lot, with vo2max also up 7 points)

something seems strange between chest strap and watch, or the algorithm.

do you get respiration data with H10 ?  been thinking to try polar h10 ( will lose out on running dynamics tho, they actually have help me improved my running forms)

  • A few of my friends report that they have fewer problems if they have BTL turned on. But I don't think that solves the problem.

H10 supports Respiration Rate. In fact, all chest HR measurement bands that send R-R intervals data support it.

The new Garmin watches supports Run Dynamic without using a belt, except left/right balance, and if you use h10, you practically get all the data.

  • Today I will try Bluetooth mode and see if respiration data stays connected

I just past my return window on my second hrm pro plusDisappointed so getting h10 means extra $90

All I really want is the lactate threshold update.  I couldn't figure out why I stopped getting it since Feb (worked fine prior months ) at this rate of $ invested, I am almost can do a lab vo2max+lactate threshold test!! (Bought two hrm pro plus)

Now I think it is because of missing respiration data during the run and guided test.  So it Can't detect hrv deflection point due to missing respiration data.

I looked backed at my guided tests and some hard runs, all have major gaps in respiration data Disappointed

I don't understand why it stopped maintaining solid connection for respiration data.  Been working fine since I bought last year till Feb this year.  wearing same way, with same soaking prep.  The only thing different from before (no gaps ) to now (with gaps) is my watch firmware version..

  • H10 lasted only two days. Today it measured 180 downhill and it locked on cadence, although they claim that this is only possible with optical pulse rate monitors. I don't want to bother with that anymore and I won't measure the pulse any more. I will also switch off the wrist monitor at the start of the activity and rely on my sixth sense Slight smile
