What a poor service from Garmin Spain

Hi,

Garmin, normallly when  someone sells something and the manual it states that you can change the battery usually it can be done without and issue. If you sell the HRM Pro and if the client tries only once to change the battery as the manual states and the product after that ends up dead, SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PRODUCT.

Back in the day I bought and HRM-Run, tried to change the battery and wow, it didn't work. I contacted the support and they sent me a HRM Pro, nice one.

Fast forward, one year after I'm in the same situation. I tried to change the battery on my HRM-Pro and surprise! HRM-Pro DEAD again. I contacted with them and obviously the can't change it because "it's out of warranty", so you send me a malfunctioning product and "sorry it's out of warranty", nice. I mailed back them, saying that if you sell a product that you can change the battery, it must work, otherwise they're LYING, they should sell the accessory stating "when you ran out of battery you should throw it to the bin, because you can't change the battery". I even sent them 9 LINKS of people complaining the same issue, even some people with hrm pro out of warranty.

Anyway, I really hope that they can see it through because they're losing a loyal client, I won't pay 129€ for HRM-Pro that will end up dead in one year.

  • I don't know what it went wrong :(

I just followed the manual to change the battery for the same model and it went dead :(

That is normal. No company will give you a replacement for a replacement for free, the guarantee is always counted from the original purchase date.
Otherwise you could buy a product one time and then let it be replaced for free again and again, if the guarantee would always start new with the replacement.

I tried to change the battery on my HRM-Pro and surprise! HRM-Pro DEAD again.

I changed battery on a HRM Dual two times (same procedure). It lives.

I changed battery on a HRM Pro recently, it lives.

Maybe you killed it with static electricity? If you work on electronic devices, ALWAYS unload yourself by touching something with „earth potential“ like an installed radiator. Or even wear a bracelet that is connected to earth.

And one other thing: Have you tried the „reverse polarity“ trick?

  • That was not a joke, see here, especially the „Damage prevention in electronics“ section.

  • No, seriously. You can kill electronics with electrostatic discharge and a HRM sensor that you open and touch might be killed too.

You can laugh about it, but what does it hurt to ground yourself before opening the sensor?

  • Yeah I know about static can kill things, I work in the IT with motherboard’s lol.

    What is the reverse polarity?

  • What is the reverse polarity?

    See here, eg:

“We recommend replacing the batteries & performing a reverse polarity on your Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) by following the steps below.

    Please follow the steps below to perform a Reverse Polarity on your Sensor / HRM – this will reset the module and allow connection with your head unit;

    • Take the battery out, and flip it over and insert it back into the  HRM to reverse the polarity
    • Hold it in there for 5 - 10 seconds
    • This will reset the HRM strap
    • Then remove the old battery and install the new battery properly.
    • Ensure the module is fixed to the strap correctly. (only applicable to HRM’s with removable module)
    • If using a HRM, wet the electrodes on the strap & position it on your body securely as per the user manual instructs.
    • Perform 5-10 start jumps to get your heart rate up & commence the pairing process.

You may be required to follow the pairing steps for each sensor after battery replacement as per user manual instruction.

Not necessarily. It could well be the person who changes the battery is doing something wrong. Granted it’s not as easy as it should be to replace the battery on the HRM-Pro as several people posting here can attest. However, it can be done and I have two HRM-Pros in my house that have had the battery changed on several occasions and still work as expected. The key is to make sure that very thin o-ring is properly seated before putting the cover back on. It’s not easy and I’ve rarely been able to get it right first time. I’ve found a smear of silicone grease helps to keep it seated.

However, it should be easier. Users should not need engineering degrees to change batteries. At least the HRM-Pro+ addresses the battery change issue. Some people have had great support from Garmin with changing the strap. It might be worth persisting with them and seeking help from somebody with more authority. Otherwise, sadly you’ll need to replace the strap.
