Chest strap to pair with Forerunner 955

Hello! I've seen countless reviews, comparison videos, and reddit posts this past week about sports watches and chest straps. I finally decided on the Garmin FR955 and I'm still undecided on the chest strap. I'm not really interested in the power dynamics since running isn't my main sport, but CrossFit (which is why I need the chest strap, since most workouts would require me to remove the watch). Now, I've seen people mention the Polar H10 can record 1 workout but I've also seen that it doesn't support offloading to watches? I like the fact that the H10 is cheaper and the strap is replaceable, and since the running dynamics isn't a plus for me, is there any reason why I should get the Garmin Pro Plus over the H10?

    Correct.

If you want to record HR data when the strap is disconnected from the watch, then the only options are the HRM-Tri and HRM-Pro. Please note, though, that although you don't wear the watch, it still remains connected to the strap as long as it is within radio range, so perhaps there is no need for post-activity download, and in that case even the simplest and cheapest HR strap will do.

From what I've seen, the range is pretty short, like 3-10m (I believe using ANT+) and I don't want to be limited to a small space when working out. Am I mistaken? If the supported range is much larger, then I can definitely get an H10 I suppose. If not, then I'd need the Garmin straps since they can save the data until I am back in range. I just don't like the fact that they are "disposable" in the sense that the strap and sensor are one and the same, and thus are more expensive to replace.

Well, in open space you might get lucky and get farther, but generally yes, that's the kind of range we're talking about.

Indeed, looks like there is no alternative.

  • Yes, it looks like it. Thank you for your help!
