Cleaning sweat from inside my HRM Pro.

Like many others my HRM Pro battery only lasts a few days and following comments on here I checked my O ring. Yes it's slightly squashed and I suspect that as I'm a very sweaty person, some sweat has entered the device. Liberally coating the O ring might have been been a good idea but too late now. So, how do I clean out the sweat from within the device so that I can return to having a long life device? I accept that I'll need loads of silicone grease in the future, that is if I can get it work once more.

  • You could try contact cleaner. Just don't get it on the O-ring. Let it dry for a while. If you use a lubricant for the O-ring, make sure it will work with it and not degrade it.

  • I've used silicone grease when reassembling my HRM-PRO and it's survived at least two sessions in the washing machine since, plus daily sweat sessions for about 18 months. The o-ring never appeared damaged or squashed. Grease was just belt and braces.

Unfortunately it reached end of life for me when one of the screws/bolts and the receptacle it screws into broke free from the plastic housing. I thought I was careful and gentle when tightening, evenly, across the diagonal, but something went wrong. It was replaced under warranty due to the failure, but it never leaked.

I would always recommend a little silicone grease - you do not want to swamp it - and then go easy on tightening the screws, safe in the knowledge that it should remain watertight.

The other thing to watch for is hairline cracks in the housing. The point of failure might not be the o-ring.

  • I;m big fan of Garmin, but theis chest straps are garbage. We have local running club and we all have broken 2-3 Garmin chest straps. I personaлly tried 3 of them and thay all stop working after year or two. I have one chinese brand and still going strong after all that years. Garmin chest straps have awful durability and quality.
