hrm pro lifefitness elliptical

I use the HRM Pro chest strap, M/N A03699 usually with the Forerunner 45 wrist device.  My gym has a LifeFitness elliptical trainer (pictured) that I would guess is not too old since the building is only just over a year old.  I was surprised that the heart rate from my chest strap is not automatically picked up and displayed on the elliptical screen, which is something I have come to expect even from 20 year old technology.  I can get them to pair, but only if I first turn off or move out of range both my Forerunner 45 and my phone. If that's the choice, I'll  just forego seeing my heart rate on the elliptical screen and look at the wrist device when needed.  Is this behavior of the strap / elliptical / wrist device expected?  In other words, is the chest strap designed only to furnish its signal to a single device at a time, and once it has paired with the 45 you are stuck with that unless you separate them physically?  Or is this a feature (dare I say fault) of the LifeFitness elliptical?  Or is there some setting somewhere I'm failing to try?
