Sorry if already covered. Question about speed sensor and how it interacts with the GPS speed.

Hi all.

This question was somewhat addressed a few years ago on the Forerunner series but here goes...

I have a Venu SQ and have been using the GPS regularly on my rides. I came across a speed sensor and ran a test using the sensor only and

another Garmin device using the GPS only. The difference in speed was about .6mph

So, that brings me to my question: On the Garmin Venu SQ, will the speed sensor override the GPS to give me a more accurate speed result?

  • The difference in speed was about .6mph

Was this the difference in average speed at the end of the ride or a difference you saw briefly during the ride?

If you have a speed sensor you need to check the wheel size/ If that is wrong then you will have large differences. Best practice is to set the wheel size manually and not use automatic. The speed sensor will be preferred if set.

  • Thanks for the response!

I set the wheel size manually after carefully measuring it. To answer your first question, yes the .6 difference was in average speed after the ride.

  • And I read that as 6 mph not 0.6! Oops! In which case depending on the length go the ride I'd suggest that could be a reasonable difference
