HRM Bricked after firmware update to 8.1

Anyone else have a bricked HRM after the latest firmware update?  It failed twice even though I took off the watch to leave it next to the HRM.  When I came back a bit later, watch won’t connect to HRM at all.  Tried pulling battery and leaving out for a while, deleted HRM from watch and won’t find again to reconnect.  Worst part is I’m just out of 1yr warranty.

  • Worst part is I’m just out of 1yr warranty.

Contact Garmin customer service regardless. Be cordial about it and there's a good chance they'll send a free replacement despite being just out of warranty.

  • Have you tried a new battery?

  • This may have happened to me as well.  HRM has been working fine, got the update and it was dead today.  I put a new battery in, but nothing.  I measured the new battery after being in for only a minute or two and it was down at 2.4V, so I measured the impedance across the battery terminals and it was 13-14ohms.  However, it would be kind of odd for this to be caused by a software update.  Strange.

  • Did you check the battery voltage before you installed it?

It's rare but I have had new batteries be low voltage straight out of the pack. Try another battery and check the voltage before you install it.

  • Yes, I checked.  It was also the typical behavior of a battery connected to a short, because it was slowly recovering after removing from the HRM and while measuring.  And then confirmed by checking the HRM battery terminals had a short (13ohm) across.  So the HRM is toast.

edit: clarify when the battery was recovering

  • I'd tend to agree its a hardware fault and not related to the firmware update. Just unfortunate timing.

Hopefully you can get it replaced under warranty.

  • I highly doubt that this is coincidental. My HRM Pro also bricked after upgrading firmware this week (mine updated to 8.80). I tried replacing the battery. After leaving the HRM without battery for sometime and popping in the new battery, I see the HRM getting detected by Epix 2 and Edge 1040, but no heart rate signal received by both devices.

    solved

  • I wore mine during the update. I just sat on the couch while it updated.

  • 'should you not be wearing the hrm-pro during update ?'

    No he shouldn't

    • During the update, you can remove the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus and place it on a table next to your Garmin device. The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus will remain connected and have the best 'line of sight' to your Garmin device while completing the update.
