HRM-Pro, Activity Tracking, Cycling (Rouvy)

I have a HRM-Pro and an Instinct.  My difficulty is that when using the HRM-Pro and cycling, the steps really add up quickly.  Specifically if I am using my Garmin Edge or biking on Rouvy since you don't actually start an activity on the watch then.  Any way to distinguish that steps during a cycling event aren't added to the overall count?

  • When you go into one of the Cycling Activities on your Instinct, it sends a message to the HRM-Pro that suppresses the step counting, even if you don't start the Activity on the Instinct.  So briefly going into a Cycling Activity on your wearable before starting your ride is one option.  If you aren't interested in having the HRM-Pro ever count steps for you, you could disconnect the HRM-Pro from the Garmin Connect app and then your steps won't get synced.

  • Oh interesting...so just go to the Instinct, say I'm going to do a cycling workout and never click start?  Then go back to home post workout?  That seems like a perfect solution if it works!

  • Yup, that should work.  You can go back to the Home screen after a few minutes even.

  • I guess I have always started a indoor bike activity on my watch every time I do a Virtual Ride (RGT, Zwift, etc)... then delete the Garmin copy on Strava and add the mythical virtual "distance" to my Garmin activity.

I don't sync the virtual platforms to my Garmin.  Garmin uses your Power&HR data and analyzes the info on the device side (load, performance rating, aerobic/anaerobic training effect, recovery hours, FTP, etc)... so best to get the most out of my watch/data on the Garmin side of things.  Even though I also use Strava to track training load/recovery, etc.
