Garmin Instinct Solar Heartrate messing up ?

When I go for a bike ride I use my Garming Instinct to send my Heartrate to my edge 1030.

Lately i've noticed the in app that my training level was 0 for my last rides. So i've check closely and as soon as I start riding my heartrate goes up to about 120 and then it flatens out and stays between 80 and 90 on the watch.

Hearrate

Anything I can do ? Or is the heart rate monitor broken ?

  • Just send it back to garmin as it is still under warranty, hopefully get a replacement soon as I really can't miss it.

  • I will occasionally see low heart rates from the wrist sensor if the temps are 40f or lower.

  • it's around my wrist so the temps are fine, the weather is really bad here lately, so was riding indoor.
Used my girlfriends Venu and it worked fine today.

  • This looks like a symptom of the OHR operating in a low power state, not suited to exercise. This happens if you use the broadcast heart rate function in isolation, without starting to record an activity and broadcasting from within the activity.

There was quite a stink about this two years ago in the Fenix 6 forums until people understood the operation and limitations. In short, if you are active and want heart rate broadcast then start an activity. Otherwise the watch OHR will remain stuck in low power state, suited only to lower heart rate such as sitting and maybe walking. Of course, Instinct might be different to Fenix 6, so consider my assessment as speculation and not fact.

The much better option, IMHO, is simply to use a chest strap. For anything more strenuous than walking I always do.

  • It worked just fine before with broadcasting the heart rate, I basicly always broadcast for cycling and only indeed use it during an activity when I was walking.

I was already thinking to buy a chest strap. We will see, if I get my watch back or a new one if it's working like inteded again.
The thing is when I use my girlfriends Venu 4, it even tells me it will use more power to broadcast the heart rate and it's correct there.
