HRM Pro Spikes, is this a normal behaviour?

Hi:

First of all sorry for my bad english.

I bought an HRM Pro band 4 days ago but I am a bit disappointed with it.

I synced it with my garmin fenix 6s pro by ant+ and everything was ok, It updated to 7.40 but the graphics of the heart rate are a bit strange.

When doing exercise it goes everytime up and down (not too much, + 10 , -10 BPM) so the graphics gives a lot of spikes.

I want to know if everyone has the same results and this is a normal behaviour or if it is faulty, I have a polar H10 and when using it with the fenix 6s pro gives more stable heart measures, and also the watch has more stable heart measures.

Is it normal to go up and down constantly?.

I have tried to wet the sensors and everything like the manual says but the reads are always the same, always with small peaks going up and down...

Here you got an example with the HRM Pro

And this is an example with the Polar H10

As you can see I was walking but it has constant up and down spikes and with the Polar H10 this does not happen.

I am thinking on returning it but I wanted to know other users opinion.

Thanks for your help.

  • I'm not sure. I am also experiencing with HRM duo and comparing it to ForeRunner 245's optical HR sensor. Can you wear both the HRM and H10 at the same time and show both graphs from the same excersize?

  • I paired an HRM2-SS HRM Chest strap transmitter to my 245 and it took over. I did this as a test because the recent 8.2 update killed the usefulness of the Optical HRM Sensor in my 245. My max heart rate and avg dropped by 40-50 BPM using the optical sensor after the update.

I had to turn off the chest strap sensor to get the optical to display again. I also have a Garmin edge for cycling. Using the chest strap sensor connected to both devices, they tracked each other closely for HR, which futher confirmed the optical HRM had faulted (post update).

The watch history only shows a single device so unless there is something in a software app that logs both, the way I compared was; Optical HRM turned on in the watch and chest strap turned off in watch; chest strap sensor paired to the Edge, started and ended both devices simultaneously for the same activity and compared post mortem  (so to speak)

The duo supports blue tooth and ant+ and the 245 can broadcast HR data so if you have an external device that can accept two bluetooth feeds you could do it that way.

Power off/on, master reset did not help the Optical Sensor problem which was associated with a lot of information exchanged with  Garmin Support (who was willing to change out the watch).

But since my 245 was less than a week old, I returned to the retailer and an exchange has been ordered which hopefully will come with the 7.8 firmware (since it's from existing stock) at which point I will promptly turn off auto updates.

Doubtless there are issues fixed with 8.2, but I was very happy with the watch (for 2 days) before the update was applied and while I'm sure there are fixes that in 8.2 that I may not appreciate because I haven't used or explored those features. I think I want any update to be out in the wild for a while before embracing them for MY watch; with the possible exception of being sure to apply an existing update prior to the warranty running out.

  • Ah, yes, you're right. I had to use this datafield to be able to use the HRM-SS data without it overtaking the built-in optical sensor of the watch and compare them:

You should either remove the HRM-SS from the watch, or disable it. The DF will detect it, and this way when you look at your run in the garmin connect mobile app (or web) you'll see the watch's optical HR sensor as "Heart Rate", and the DF will report the HRM-SS as "Auxilary Heart Rate". You can even go to the HR graph and chose the AuxHR graph to display it on to top of it which is very* helpful to compare them. *) there is a slight problem with comparing them, because both graphs are streched on the Y axis betwhen the min/max value of the graph, so they won't match 100% but you'll be able to see where they're OK, and where the HRM-SS is 30-50 heart-beats off (usually the first 20 minutes, probably until the strap gets enough sweat - even though I rinse the strap in tap water before the run). When you move your finger on the graph in the mobile app it displays the values of both so you'll be able to see their real value at any given point.

and there are these other 2 I haven't tried (I think they are older, not maintained versions, but not sure)
