Garmin 610 buttons not working and other odds stuff

I have a Garmin 610 and was working fine until yesterday. The watch was beep like it lost a satellite signal and stopped recording my run time. Then shortly after it goes to lock screen, it'll beep and the buttons will work to allow me to restart the Timer. Then it'll stop the Timer (beep) and buttons (lap, light, start/stop) won't work until it goes to lock screen and beeps again.

I was able to upload my data.

I tried to do a master reset, but I get the Software Loader screen, then goes to the Touch the Dot screen (which I can touch the dots), but it never returns to the original Garmin screen, unless I connect the watch to the charger.

Does anyone know why this is happening-buttons not working (they don't even make that beeps sound)? Did moisture/sweat get inside the watch? New battery, but my battery still charges?

For a 10 year old watch, it could be a variety of things. Maybe aweatherall has some ideas, as I'm not sure your post will get a lot of traction on the accessories forum.

Thanks, I thought I would just ask as I have researched several sites and videos. It seems that anytime I flick my wrist it starts/stops, but I can tap the face then hit buttons start/stop/lap whichever is the opposite of what it was doing earlier.
