The second tip is for a cadence and HR sensor. The number of miles/speed on a trainer varies substantially depending on the type and difficulty. The same can be said with my Kurt Kinetic fluid 2 trainer at dirtbikeadvisorand an old mag trainer. I finally gave up and determined that the only things that mattered in my training were my power, cadence, and HR statistics. In any case, I didn't go anywhere outside of my basement. If you're following a structured winter training program, I believe that time spent on the trainer is far more helpful than miles travelled outside.
