Neo smart bike, no more resistance

I had three Garmin smart trainer since 2017, the first one, a Tacx Neo was perfect during 5 years and about 30000Km, the 2nd one, a Tacx NEO 2T had had problems of "slippage" when pressing hard on the pedals, sold last year to buy a Neo smart bike because it was easier to use for my wife and me (no bike exchange).

Unfortunatly, we had problems, a noise in the right crank as soon as it was put into service, Garmin did not make any effort to fix the problem and this has been going on for 3 months now.
Wednesday after finishing my zwift workout, a new problem appeared, the crankset had no resistance and the home trainer became unusable.
I immediately sent an email with a video of the problem to Garmin. The next day, I called Garmin (20 minutes on hold) and they told me that they were forwarding my video to the Tacx technician.
3 breakdowns on the three home-trainers we had, that's a lot.

has anyone had the same resistance problem with their smart bike?

  • Just encountered the same issue today. Zero resistance, red led flashing. Tacx app flashed up overheating codes, now says it all good to go. Email sent to support. Hopefully they have a resolution. Trainer just over 2 years old. Hopefully the warranty stands. Fingers crossec

  • I have experienced something that sounds fairly similar with my Trainer which is 8 months old. However I did not get a red light flashing or any kind of notification in the tacx app - it just says the trainer is 100% functional. I just have a "completely dead trainer".

See video of how the cranks behave: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/EaNJnqTSY9A

It started 2 weeks ago - and then it somehow worked the next day and was functional during a couple of workouts -until the resistance suddenly disappeared again when I put some extra power on. And then it came back 2 days later - and disappeared after 40 minutes the next day when I stopped due to a phone call, the resistance was gone and the bike dead when I started pedalling again.

Just sent an e-mail to Garmin regarding this now. Have any of you gotten a response back from Garmin regarding this issue?

EDIT: I see there is a different thread about the same issue here:
    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/indoor-training/f/tacx-neo-bike-smart/284911/no-resistance-anymore

Apparently it is more widespread than I would have thought.

EDIT2 [2023-03-21]: I have been told that I will get a replacement unit. So solution for this issue is to contact customer support, and they will help out Slight smile Most likely cause of this problem is: "a destroyed freehub connecting the pedals to the flywheel"

  • Update. Received a reconditioned unit FOC.
30 months after original sale. 6 days turnaround from sending original unit back.
Hats off to Garmin for going above and beyond after the 2 year warranty expired.
