TACX Alpine Support Thread!

Hi Moderators,

Could any of you please open a dedicated thread for the TACX Alpine? I got mine installed today and would like to report a bug regarding connection between the TACX Training app and the Alpine. Also I would like to share my impressions regarding the Alpine.

Thanks!

  • I got my second TACX Alpine today. While setting it up everything went flawless. I did the firmware update without any issues. I was able to ride about 8 miles on Zwift and everything worked fine. 3 or 4 hours later, I tried to connect to the Alpine with my iPhone and Tacx Training app and it was not possible. I had to Forget the bluetooth device and pair it again in order to connect with my iPhone. This is the second Alpine showing the same issue. I returned one this weekend and ordered this second unit from Garmin and it is showing the same problem. I came to the conclusion that it is a bug in the latest firmware because with firmware 6.0.0 I had no problem during setup. All the connectivity issues started after the firmware update. The same issue is now affecting steering over Zwift because the Alpine is not connecting over BT. My NEO 2T is working fine over BT and ANT+ but looks like firmware v2.6.0 and v7.0.3 for the Alpine broke BT connectivity for some. I already communicated this issue to Garmin. Let’s see what they respond.

  • did anyone notice high pitched noises sometimes? as if something is resonating

  • I did not notice any pitched noises in the units I returned.

  • mine also does knocking sound when it changes direction and  the high pitched resonance sounds seem only audible when it is controlled by zwift. if i tap control buttons, there are no any through all the travel.
also i noticed i have to enable pairing (auto long press) every time in order zwift to detect it

  • That’s one of the reasons I returned the 2 units I had. The Alpine does not keep BT devices stored so every time you want to connect to the TACX Training app or to Zwift for Steering, you have to forget the device in you phone or PC and start the pairing process all over again. Also standby is not working so the Alpine wakes up from sleep every 15 mins. Knowing Garmin, fixing these annoying bugs could take months, if they even care enough to fix them. I have no plans to purchase it again if these bugs are not fixed first.

  • Hello and thanks for your post, I apologize for the delayed response.

was in contact with Garmin Support and we are working to eliminate Bluetooth disconnect and re-connect behavior with the Tacx Alpine.

We will share more info when updates are available, but a full resolution for all apps (like Zwift) will require 3rd party app-specific updates as well.

    Current workarounds:

    • If using only the Tacx Training app (not Zwift or any other apps) you will need to remove the device from the Bluetooth list and do a “clean” (new) pairing in Tacx Training app.
    • For Zwift users, please force close the Tacx app (close the app completely, meaning it cannot run in the background) while using Zwift, and “Forget” the Alpine from the list of Bluetooth connections before opening the Zwift app.
    • If using the Alpine with Tacx Desktop App (PC) after it has been connected to a mobile device, first remove the Alpine from the Bluetooth list of the previously paired device, this way it will not affect the PC.

Do these bugs affect all Tacx Alpine devices or just a few?

I was planning on ordering one when stock arrives but I really don't want it to come with frustrating bugs and work arounds. I'd be using the Alpine with Tacx T2 and Rouvy (Android app).

If I buy one now is it likely to work bug free or should I hold off until Garmin and 3rd party app developers have the Alpine functioning reliably?

    Thanks

  • These bugs affects ALL TACX Alpine units. I have returned 2 units already because both units showed exactly the same bugs. I'm too OCD to deal with those kind of issues so the TACX Alpine in its current state is a big no for me.

  • I hear you but I just wanted to know if Garmin says they are all affected. Your two out of two makes me ask. Alternatively you might have been very unlucky.

Anyway it beggars belief that Garmin would spend a lot of time effort and money developing yet another impressive devise and then bring it to market without having tested it to identify and resolve any bugs. Why do they do this? There are any number of enthusiasts out there who would gladly test new devices for them before release

  • Only some users who updated their Tacx Alpine firmware during a short time period would experience behavior where the Alpine can not automatically reconnect via Bluetooth. The affected update was removed and is no longer available.

Garmin is also aware of an error within the Zwift App that impacts this Bluetooth connection, we are working with Zwift to make all updates as seamless as possible over the coming weeks.
