Overheating, burning smell, Erg mode disabled then loss of resistance

Hi, recently I was cycling at a steady 100w then had a strong burning smell, overheating, ERG mode changed to disabled then loss of all resistance, I have raised a case with Garmin. Is this a bearing issue or something else? Any help would be appreciated

  • If you're in the UK and have no luck with Garmin you could try Rich Webb in the Neo Facebook Group. I've no personal dealings with the guy, but the vibe looks very positive. He's built quite the cottage industry for Neo servicing and repairs.

  • Yep in the UK - many thanks for the advice.  Let's see what Garmin say, if not I'll give this chap a shout.

    Many thanks,

  • Had the same issue with Neo 2T about a year ago. Had to unplug it from socket for 10-15 min., then plug it again and wait for 5 min before start using it. Since then I'm waiting 5-10 min. after plugin it in socket, before start using it, and it works perfectly fine.

  • Interesting - I'll give that a try also - many thanks.

This problem occurs frequently on both Neo and Neo2.

The problem is known in Garmin and nothing change...

My first Neo smart burned...i returned and propose refurbishe for 700 dollars !!!!

    I bought Neo smart 2T and after 1 year...burned !!!!

    I returned and refurbished...

    So I bought Wahoo KICKR...fantastic !

    Finished Tacx/Garmin....the 2200 watts....it's a dream !!! Profesionnals...they must burn Tacx everydays...

Garmin changed nothing to the FAN problem...maybe i hope on the Neo Smart 3 !

  • Any response from Garmin? What do they charge for a replacement after warranty is up?

  • Garmin were quick on email response.  They replaced with a like for like refurb unit for £300.

  • hello, I'm hesitating between wahoo kickr V5 and tacx neo 2t, this heating problem is not very reassuring, is it solved?

    Hi,

Don't dream...Garmin does not care about this big problem.

I bought 2 tacx neo smart 2....both burn...the first one refurbished by Garmin after 2 months because under warranty....the second no warranty so I paid 780 euros (780 Dollars)...

    I used to have 2 fans...that burned !!!!

So I bought  a wahoo kickr....PERFECT with one FAN.

I think the power with Kickr is not as perfect as tacx neo smart....but it is perfect for Zwift and no problem at this time burning or smell smoke....

Don't choose tacx if you want to develop power over 250 watts...

The other problem is that Garmin bought tacx and they do nothing to correct this well known problem !!!!

When you ear the FAN, you understand it is a ridiculous one.

If you use Tacx with ambiant temperature under 20 degrees, it's ok....over 20°C....it's dead if you develop prolonged power....it smell and it stops......sometime...it's to late...all burned....and you Tacx neo smart you paid 1300 euros...is dead....A shame !!!!

Problem was known with Tacx neo smart..... NOTHING changed with Neo smart 2 !!!!!

I send many mail to Garmin....no answer.....

So buy Wahoo kickr, you will be happy Wink
