Overheating, burning smell, Erg mode disabled then loss of resistance

Hi, recently I was cycling at a steady 100w then had a strong burning smell, overheating, ERG mode changed to disabled then loss of all resistance, I have raised a case with Garmin. Is this a bearing issue or something else? Any help would be appreciated

  • Disassembled my unit to troubleshoot, front fan spins for 5 seconds when trainer connected, but back fan doesn't. Voltage at back fan is 0v so the board is not sending power to that fan, the front fan got 12 v

Something is wrong with board or firmware.

Unfortunately my unit I bought it used a year ago, so probably no warranty from Garmin

  • Did you check the single use thermal fuse at the exhaust of the two resistance units?

Once it has 'blown' the resistance units are unusable until it is replaced. If the resistance unit fan power also goes via the thermal fuse that may be why you have 0v.

  • Thanks for your reply! I don't remember seen a fuse with the resistors, unless it is the one that looks as a diode or thermistor but that one have continuity on both directions. So if it is a diode it will not longer be good, but if it is a fuse or thermistor then it is fine

  • Fuse is probably the wrong word. It is a thermal protection device that will break the circuit if the exhaust air from the load bank exceeds the activation temperature. If you can find a part number on it you may be able to find what its specifications are.

Did you get a burning smell from your NEO 2T before it failed? Was it the smell of burnt electronic components or something else?

From my limited experience with overheating components there is usually some sign of heat damage to the circuit board when they get hot enough for the magic smoke to escape.

  • The same problem just happened to me: Neo 2T with overheating, a burning smell and no resistance watts after 10 minutes of session. Do you have any idea which component may have gone bad?
My warranty has already expired after 3 years and Garmin technical service takes a long time to solve it.

  • In my experience the problem is caused by failure of one of the cooling fans. I've had a fan blocked by internal debris, fixed by removing the debris, but also fan failure, requiring return and warranty replacement.

  • The two fans do not work even though I have cleaned them of dust.
I am in contact with technical support but they are not as fast as I want.

  • It could be motherboard issue, in certain cases that helps if you connect the 2 fans with an additional power supply and in this case the fans will be working on full speed and ignoring the inside temp . the support will offer a refurbished replacement with minimal (or without warranty) for 600 eur apprx as i remember good. if you live in the UK, or close to it in EU, check the https://www.theturbotrainerdoctor.com/ and contact with him directly , he is very helpful .

  • Thks Luko. I live in Argentina, so... hope the local Garmin help me Rolling eyes
