Can Vivosmart 5 track indoor rowing activity whilst connected via ANT+ (broadcasting HR) to rowing machine

Just purchased a Vivosmart 5 because we have a Concept2 rowing machine which uses ANT+ and my partner has a Phoenix that connects and can record activities at the same time.

I wanted to record my indoor rowing as he does, with distance traveled etc., and see my heart rate on the rower.

I can connect to the rower if I broadcast HR, but then there is no way to start an activity without stopping the broadcast.  The MoveIQ doesn't detect rowing at all, so no activity is logged.

I can start the indoor rowing activity but then I cannot broadcast HR to the rower without stopping the activity.  Tracking the rowing without a connection to the Concept2 means I get no distance traveled or average pace etc. in the app whereas my partners Phoenix does.

Unless there is a fix for this then I have been mis-sold a vivosmart 5 as capable of ANT+ AND capable of tracking indoor rowing as it appears it can only do one or the other.

What am I missing?

  • While the vivosmart 5 does have an Indoor Rowing activity profile and is capable of Ant+, the capability is limited to broadcasting heart rate from the device to the rowing machine. It does not have the capability to treat the rowing machine as an external sensor and as such can not receive  activity data from the rowing machine.

  • Agree with the original poster. This is very disappointing. Can/Will this be added in the future via updates?
