Walking activity tracking not working

My vivosmart5 is acting crazy. It tracks steps fine, but when I start a Walk activity, within seconds it tells me I’ve walked 41.5 miles. I just tried it again sitting on my couch, and within 10 seconds of hitting start I got the “congratulations on 1 mile” notification. All with 0 steps.

A few things to check. Possibly your phone's GPS was disabled, or the Garmin Connect app was not connected to your watch while you were walking.

I tried all these suggestions but nothing helped. I finally found another thread on this forum where people were posting about these exact same issue for at least a year. It didn’t look like Garmin provided any useful help. I read another user’s post where they said they physically turned their watch all the way off and then back on, and that took care of it. It tried that and it fixed it. It’s really too bad that Garmin has been having this issue for over a year yet they provide no help in finding a solution, or in making the solution readily available to the public.
