Speed/cadence sensor is way off

I have the Garmin speed and cadence sensor on my mountain bike. Brand new, received with the watch about a month ago. I set it up following the instructions so as far as I can tell, the wheel diameter should be correct.

Something is off though. The two items shown above are from the exact same bike ride - the top one was measured from the sensors, (which sensor?  Or both?) and the other one was recorded in Komoot. That one shows me a map of the route I took and is absolutely correct.

What is going on here? I bought the sensors for the bike so I wouldn't need a bunch of extra apps and maps, but that data is not even close. This is just one example. Another day earlier in the week, the sensors showed about 5 different rides that varied in duration from 30 seconds to 5 minutes and recorded only a fraction of the distance traveled. It was also a 10km ride but only 3 or 4km was recorded with the sensors.

How can I fix this? Also, are there any other biking apps that are compatible besides Komoot?

Thanks

  • Both of my Garmin Speed Sensor 2's are based on wheel circumference, not diameter.

  • Oops, wording mistake. I meant circumference.

  • The Vivosmart 5 cannot be paired to any sensors at this time. Maybe you posted this under the wrong product/ If that is the case please let me know which watch you own so I can move this thread to the correct product page.

Also, we would want to look into activity files to see where the data was coming from. Depending on the watch you are using we may be able to determine the root cause and recommend that you use GPS for cycling outdoors. We recommend using speed and cadnece sensors for indoor activities. Unless your watch does not support GPS outdoors. Please answering the following to better assist:

    • Do we have permission to email you?
    • Do we have permission to access your Connect account?
    • What country do you reside in?
  • I'm in Canada and yes you have those permissions.

It looks like I am in the wrong part of the forum, I do have a vivosmart 5 but it is my android phone that the sensors are connected to.

I put the sensors on my bike because I also plan on getting a stand for my basement so I can still "ride" in winter. I would like to get the sensors matched up with the GPS for when I do eventually bring it indoors.

Also, is there a reason why the data is so intermitent? As mentioned, a single trip often results in several different biking entries and are not accurate at all.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Okay, it looks like there is some confusion here. The app will not pair to the cadence sensor, however, it can pair to the speed sensor. Also, looking at your activities, you can see that 1 of them lasted for over an hour while the one with the speed sensor only lasted 20 minutes. Which would explain why it didn't record the entire distance. The speed is also different for both activities which is why the distance data does not match.

This will need to be reviewed in details with you, therefore, I recommend reaching out to your local Garmin Support team.
