Using its accelerometer, the watch is recording your arm movement, not your foot movement. So, in cases where your arm movement doesn't match your foot movement, it's going to be off. Holding trekking poles will cause a reduced number of steps to be recorded. A possible workaround would be to put the watch in a hip pocket.
