vivoactive 5 10.20 - unstable connection and hung

Since 3 days ago after I get the 10.20 software, the connection to my phone has been deteriorated. Constant connection drop, and multiple time the watch pop up the pin and ask to reconnect.

Removed the watch from garmin connect, reset the watch, connection is still hit and miss. Notification come in late as well.

It wasn't a problem before 10.20 software update.

  • Speak of the error and it doth appear, no?

To be fair, since 11.14 there's been a notable decrease in occurances. Not sure if it actually increased in stability or if its coincidence. Suppose time will tell.

  • I just switched my Huawei P30 to Samsung S23 and zero problems so far. Hope it stays this way.

  • One week after upgrade to 11.14 and... lost pairing.  I must say a week without losing pairing/watch face is a personal record but this is still unacceptable.

  • Vivoactive 5 updated to 11.14 and my Samsung S22 Ultra phone is up-to-date.  Watch still lost pairing and I had to start from scratch again. I install nothing now, I use the simplest watch face possible (time only) since there was a different bug which would put the watch is power-saving mode due to overnight stray touches.  The watch is now down to bare bones useful sort-of on a good day.  Probably time to switch to a different brand.  I cannot rely on this unreliable $250 hunk of junk.

  • Now bumped to 11.16.  Pairing lost within 2 days after upgrade.

Has anyone seen a solution for this?

  • I was getting it about once a week (back when this forum topic was opened), but it's been about three or four weeks now without a disconnect. No idea what's changed.

I use a Pixel 8 (not pro) and my VivoActive 5 has updated a few times along the way, along with my Pixel getting its monthly security updates. But I haven't changed anything that would suggest a fix.

Remember that when a disconnect happens, do not touch your watch. Just go to the Bluetooth setting on your phone and re-pair to the watch from there. It takes like 30 seconds that way, no need to go through the Garmin set up process that way.

  • My ability to re-pair quickly seems to vary -- maybe due to amount of time until I notice it.  Early notice and it's as you describe.  Later, I may have to put the watch in pairing mode.  Even later... the watch face disappears and the watch is absolutely useless until you go through the whole setup.

I've been keeping a log...  9 lost pairings in September (sometimes multiple in a day) and 11 in August. Not huge but if you're driving and want to see the time... you're screwed until you re pair everything.  I've got cars that have been paired for 5 or more years without losing pairing... and the watch software is clearly borked.  The first thing I notice is "Device <some other device than the Garmin> wants to pair with you".  It seems to have lost it's pointer/index into an array of devices.

  • I got the notification for the firmware 11.16 and this seems to have solved the disconnect problems completely.  It's been a couple of days without the disconnect notice!

  • Yep, same here. Had the update since they released it, and not a single connection drop since... Took them only 3-ish months to fix it, too.

    Neat.

  • the latest 11.x seem to have fixed the problem. but i also have a new phone now so that probably is a combination of two.

wonder if any existing huawei users still experience the same issue after software update.
