Battery Drain Problem

Hello all, I got Vivoactive 5 and it sometime drain battery by itself. I just charged yesterday afternoon and it drained %35 in my sleep. Normally it’s just %2-3 max 4 but after update it drains anormally and it making me so angry. I’m user of Garmin like ten years but I really start to hate because of this watch! Please solve this problem or I will buy Apple Watch or Fitbit it’s just frustrating

last night my battery was %100 now %62!

  • I've got a vivo active 5 battery drain overnight drain to 10% very disappointed with product

  • Same with my vivoactive5! When the battery has 100%, i drains to 10% in 3 days. Thats half of the days, my watch was going before!
    My software is 13.19.

    PLEASE FIX THIS GARMIN!!!

  • This happened to me after an update yesterday.

  • I'm Experience the same thing. Why should I do?

  • Have exactly the same issue. The update from a few days ago caused this. Resets make no diffence. Battery drains at 10% per minute. Before the update it was lasting 7 days.

  • I took my watch back and got a replacement but guess what as soon as software updates started, same battery draining problem. It would only last 1 day from about a week. I turned it off then charged it with power off and it is fine again ... until the next SW update. Garmin you need to fix this, or I'll be returning the watch again and going for a competitor brand.

  • I have been having the same issue - Vivoactive 5, connected to an android phone and windows 11 pc - all with full updates on and enabled. Every time Garmin sends an update, for the following 2-3 days i go from draining 1% every 5-6 hours to draining 1-2% per hour (more if active). It seems to sort itself out after a few days, but in that time I can't trust it. I have tried connecting to the PC, soft resets etc, removing all apps and a range of other things - none of these work reliably. I have plenty of free storage on the watch.

Apart from this issue I love the watch, and would happily continue to use Garmin products. This is however such a major drawback that I would consider other manufacturers.

THIS IS CLEARLY A SOFTWARE ISSUE - GARMIN YOU NEED TO FIX THIS AS IT IS A REPUTATIONAL RISK TO YOUR COMPANY.

I have been offered a refund or replacement - but it is not the hardware that is the problem here, and I fear that any other Garmin product could have the same issues, as I note these forums have reported similar issues with other versions of the Vivoactive range, and other watches as well.

  • After the first night the battery of my VIvoactive 5 was at 58% while it was around 91% the evening before. Since automatic updates cannot be disabled, it had updated the software from the factory installed version 14.18 to 17.01. I was not very happy. That morning I started an activity (with GPS) with the battery at 52%. I feared that the battery would go flat during my 1 hour activity, but to my surprise it was still at 46% after the activity. I decided to do a factory reset (deleting data as well) to be sure that my watch was clean again and to find out how long the watch would last with the default settings, before adjusting things. I monitored the battery usage afterwards and it was as I would expect it from a decent watch: About 3% drain in 7 hours. To my very big surprise the battery drop was only 1% (!) after a night's sleep while I was wearing the watch of course. I must add here that I have done a lot of things with the new watch after I installed it. I had it in Demo mode and pressing the B button 8 times would not stop it. I checked the user guide that said that I should press the A en B buttons simultanious for 5 seconds. That seemed to restart the watch and Demo mode was not acitve. However some time later, after a notification about an update, Demo mode became active again. With the same procedure I managed to get rid of Demo mode, but I never got a prompt asking me to stop Demo mode. So maybe there were still some processes of Demo mode running in the background, I don't know. It could also be the case that the battery drain was caused by the installation of Garmin Pay, because it seems that there is some communication with the bank for which the pseudo bank card is created. I got some status that said that the card was not yet active or something with that nature.

Long story short, resetting the watch to factory default status cured the problem, hopefully for good! I indend to keep the watch at its default setting to get an idea of battery usage over time. If that remains good, I will make one change at a time to find out if this has a negative impact on the battery usage. If something develops, I will report it here.

  • I tried a factory reset as well but as soon as an update came through the rapid battery drain started again. I'll be monitoring it over the next month and if it continues I'll be returning the watch and seeking another brand. Garmin, do better please.

  • I just got a notification to start an update or to do it later, to which I replied: do it later. But after reading the previous message, I decided to do the update because you cannot avoid it later anyway. So I went to the Sytem settings and selected 'software-update' and selected to update using Bluetooth. Then after a minute or so the watch replied with a message that there were no updates! I checked the software version and it was still 17.01. Don't know about the other version numbers because I didn't record them before the suggested update. So I am planning to record all versions so that I will be able to check whenever there is an update. I found that there are 13 other version numbers apart from the software version number. One of them being DFU which apparently stands for Device Firmware Update. So maybe this hexadecimal number is a kind of key for the firmware version (build version number).

Again got a notification 'Software update after x seconds' and counting down. Let the update take place, and watch restarted twice during the update. After the update completed I checked all version numbers and found that none of them had changed!
