Garmin IQ custom faces in Connect IQ looking potato quality

I am trying to make a custom watch face for my new Vivioactive 4S but whenever I try to upload any image, the preview looks great, but when it shows up on the actual watch, the compression makes it look disgusting. I tried a few things from changing file types, making the image smaller, and trying simpler images but they still always turned out terrible. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or if there is a way to fix it. The images on the faces I can choose from are so smooth and pretty so why do my uploaded ones look like potato quality? Here are examples of the previews versus actual results.

  • It is a MIP display. It will never have clear colors like an ALED display. That is what the VENU series is for. The Vivoactive series has the advantage of superior battery life with the display always on.

  • That is what I was wondering is that is seems to have a really limited color palette so I was wondering if the premade custom screens were edited in a certain way to make them look so crisp. I have a lot of experience in photo editing which makes me think I could make a nice looking image with the right edits to it.

  • With a MIP display, it's 64 colors so you are limited to that pallet.  You'll also find that things look different in the CIQ Sim than on a real device with a MIP display. Many of the pictures in the CIQ app store are what's displayed in the sim.

There is an entire forum about developing CIQ apps:
