Update broke my Fenix 6... Solution offered was for me to purchase another one!

My Fenix 6 worked fine... After an update the watch would power up but freeze if you drilled down into one of the menus.

I called support and they determined that the cause was a watch face the was loaded from the IQ app... They also told me that this was not repairable and that the only solution was for me to purchase another one... What..??

Again, according to Garmin, the update bricked my device because the watch face that was download from their app was not compatible... And the resolution is for me to purchase another Fenix 6.

Garmin is firm on this decision... This is unacceptable!

  • What's the name of the CIQ watchface so no one else might get burned ....

  • There is literally no way this was caused by a CIQ watch face.  The support person just wanted to close your call.

Have you just tried a simple reboot?  on a f6, press and hold the top left button until the watch turns itself off (maybe 20 seconds) and turn it back on.

  • Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the CIQ watchface... But I can show you what it looks like in this video I put together showing the issues.

*** Just wanted to add to my comment here - I have other watch faces loaded on my watch... Not just the one shown in this video. ***

  • Yes, I've tried multiple ways to both reboot and reset.

  • That is the Crystal watchface. It's well established and very popular, and I believe that its developer was named the 2019 Developer of the Year by Garmin. I highly doubt that it is causing your issues.

  • It's not the WF.  Connect to a pc/mac and remove all .prg files under garmin\apps.

This sure sounds like a HW issue to me, and if the device is out of warranty (sounds like it is) the only solution really is, buy a new watch

I've met the developer of Crystal IRL (the summit where he got the award)  It's definitely not his code.

  • Yeah... I liked that watch face too. It's was my favorite.

It's also worth calling out... I had several watch faces on the watch. All of the watch face apps had the exclamations. It would be unfair and unsupported to say that a specific watch face caused the conflict.

Garmin support communicated to me that they felt the issues was caused by a watch face / IQ conflict.

If the cause is ever uncovered, I'll post it here to help others.

  • Removing the .prg files is worth a shot.. I'll respond back with a result. Thanks for the tip!

  • Update - I was able to see the files on my computer from the watch... Located the .prg files and deleted them. Reset the watch and they come right back. Tried a few other things with no luck.

I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions to try to resolve the issue I'm having with this watch.

At this point I'm done trying to repair the problem... Take care.
