Vivoactive 4 buy now or wait for Vivoactive 5?

Hi,

I have sold my Samsung Galaxy watch 3 solely due to the battery life. I'm planning to go for a Garmin Vivoactive 4. Was planning on one of the Fenix Series but dropped it due to budget limitations.

Should I wait for the Vivoactive 5 or go with the 4 now ? Im not a pro athlete but mainly track my gym activities and sleep. Also need god battery life and a big dial as I am big :) any other options suggested ?

Thanks

Sunny

  • 6X - thats a huge one... I'm currently thinking about a 6S... ;)

  • Actually, no. The sensors on the Fenix 6 series are the same as on the VA4, and GPS is even worse due to the metal enclosure. Pulse is all right, Sp02 is trash. On the software side, Fenix has more in the box and better maintenance, but that is because the VA4 has no maintenance. Sleep tracking on both is nothing compared to Fitbit. The Garmin platform and integration with Strava/Komoot is good, the build quality of their products is good, but sensors, software, and app store are a decade behind.

  • As a new (4-days) owner of VA4, I'd say:

    • If you're asking about this, you must be seriously interested. Then go, spoil yourself and buy a new gadget immediately!
    • If you wait till VA5 is released, the decision won't be much easier: on one hand a newer technology (and I'm hoping there will be some break-trough improvements such as integration with a voice assistant etc) but at same time price of VA4 will drop down...

If you're tight in budget - just wait, if money is not too big concern - just buy it now (at worst case you will swap it in a year or so),

My personal opinion, of course Grinning

    Best regards,
    Jarek

  • I think you're too optimistic about having integration of a voice assistant, just look at Venu 2, I seriously doubt that if VA5 will be released(and Garmin don't decide to discountinue Active series) there will be more features than we can see on Venu 2.

So unless you're looking for HIIT or sleep tracking widget built-in then there are not much reasons to wait. Myself I decided not to wait and bought my VA4 a month ago, if features of new VA5 would be too cool to resist I'd try sell my current watch and upgrade

    Same thinking here!

  • Unfortunately it seems that garmin does not appear to have any interest in releasing a Vivoactive 5, but after over 2 years of waiting for any word on it there is still nothing.

I would love to see all those new features from the Venu 2 plus in the vivoactive line.

The whole reason I chose the vivoactive line (after owning a vivoactive HR, vivoactive 3 and 4) is because of the always on display that lasts 6 days or more, while being a touchscreen device.

I tried the venu 2, but I got annoyed to have to charge it every night and when enabling batter saving mode more often than not I would have to tap and fiddle with the device to get the screen to turn on. (and even with batter save mode batter didn't last more than 3 days)

I currently use my vivoactive 4, which is over 2 years old now (got it basically on release day) and battery still lasts 6 days or more... And that is what attracts me to this watch, the longevity of the battery and the fact that I can glance all of my stats at any given time without having to fight with it to show me what I want to see.

Now if we could get a cross between the solar instinct and the venu 2 plus into à vivoactive package it would be awesome!!

À touch screen device with battery life of 10+ days that's slim and functional for most activities with a battery saving mode that allows it to charge with solar energy it would be awesome! Like really awesome!

Anyway that my rant and somewhat a reason I would love to see a vivoactive 5.

I have a feeling that what you wish is going to be called Fenix 7. They discontinued VA on the purpose. Since Fenix 7 is touted to have a touchscreen, it could motivate people to chose either between Venu or Fenix. No reason to put such a premium feature as solar to budget watch. Less segmentation in lines could be not that bad thing but it's sad to see VA go.

  • Well part of the problem is that VA5 would be slim like the venu.

And the fénix 7 like the instinct is too bulky

  • That too, but I think that the person wanted solid Solar performance not bulkiness

  • I think i would actually go a different route, but which one depends on two questions. First, do you golf?  Second, do you want music on the watch?
If you don't golf and don't want music, I'd get the Instinct. It's an awesome watch that has great battery life, is very light and durable, and tracks everything.
If you don't golf and want music, I'd go Forerunner 745.
If you want music and golf, but want a Fenix, I'd get the Fenix 5 plus, which you can get some places for less than $350 new.
