Anyone happy with their Vivoactive 4?

I have just ordered a Vivoactive 4, and am waiting for delivery, so I thought I'd check these Garmin forums now that it's too late to change my mind (yes, yes, I can always return it).

Now, as an owner of many Garmin bike products, I realise that most people's motivation for getting onto a product forum is to discuss issues they are having, but it is making me nervous reading some of these posts while waiting for delivery.

Is anyone actually happy with their Vivoactive 4?  Does it meet your expectations of a AU$549 smart / sports watch?

  • Yeah, but still a bit nervous.  I'm on some of the cycling forums which are a sea of disaster stories, and from time to time people post a similar question to this.  Is anyone happy?
On the Vector3 & Edge1030 forums there is a sea of happy people that respond to these questions positively..
Here, not so, but some are.  Like I said in the post, this was already ordered when I posted, so I'm committed.  This is actually a Christmas present, which my wife & I do things like this where you essentially pick your christmas present, which spoils the surprise, but there never is disappointment.

Anyway, I'll have to wait for another 27 days before I get to crack it open, and because a few people are happy here, chances are that I'll be happy.  I've been on the bleeding edge of other Garmin products, and as long as there isn't a design flaw (yes, Vector, I'm looking at you (but this was fixed with new caps so all good now)), I'm pretty tolerant to teething issues that hopefully are fixed in software updates.

I'll be using it for SUP-ing, and keeping health stats, so I don't see myself really pushing the limits of it...

Thanks all for the feeback.  Much appreciated.

  • My Garmin va4 is my first Garmin device. I owned fitbit versa 1 and then i bought fitbit versa 2. But I was not very happy with fitbit versa 2 so i decided to splurge a little bit and get a Garmin VA4. My main gripe is that whatever fitbit advertises on their product it works. I mainly returned it because as i sport more often Fitbit misses that. Garmin is supposed to be better there and in my experience it is better in terms of details and tracking your exact workouts. But the watch doesnt fulfill the thing it advertises (at least for many people on this forum), 8 day battery life, wifi issues, hrm issues, calorie tracking issues etc. So it's more about fulfilling your promises as a company, or just reducing the price and just promise less.

  • I left fitbit a few years ago and the reason was the accuracy.  When I compared their data to other trackers for things like steps, it tended to be way too high.  People didn't complain, as it made it easier to meet their step goals, etc, but it was incorrect.

  • I send my Venu (technical the same as the VA4) back.

Garmin WAS a goof company but they srew it up. Sleep datas are a mess. 10 minutes deep sleep every night? Ifd i wear a Huawei, a samung, a Amazfit....i get 1-3h of deep sleep every night. Only the Garmin make some *** out of it.

The "great gps" tracks me on position i never was.

    Stess level? ***.

Body Battery? ***. If i take a nap the body batterie goes down and down. If i stand still in a traffic jam? It goes up. For sure im not under stress in a jam of 40 minutes

Sleep Date? Garmin are not able to track Naps. I huawei watch gt active? Can do this snce month perfect

For all of this garmin like to have 370€, like a Apple watch....but they deliver 120€ worth device.

I'm very happy with mine.  Use it for weekly tracking fast pace walking with gps etc 3 or 4 times a week and gym sessions 2 or 3 times a week.  Only issue has been the HR monitor issue with continuous blinking when removed. The fix is to just turn off the watch when its removed and turn back on when wearing. As long as its being worn this problem seems to have no impact to battery life, which is a solid 4 or 5 days at least. I'm assuming the HR issue will be fixed next update, but I can live with it for now, not a big issue.

  • If you are looking for a standard, budget-friendly, and multisport https://electgolfer.com/garmin-vivoactive-3-golf-review/, then Garmin Vivoactive 3 can be a great pick for you. The Garmin Vivoactive 3 is possibly the best multisport in its price range. I have been using Garmin Vivoactive 3 for the last 2 and a half years. Today I’m going to Garmin Vivoactive 3 golf review from a golfer’s perspective and also discuss details of its other top features, pros, and cons.

  • Isn't the Vivoactive 3 discontinued quite a while ago?

  • Personally I love my Vivoactive 4. I am an amateur runner and general fitness enthusiast so I don’t need the high end running stats you get with some of the other Garmin watches.
I like being able to track a run with the GPS and play my Spotify music whilst running without having to carry a phone.

Could it be better - yes for example sleep tracking is a bit meh and some users have experienced issues with updates but touch wood that hasn’t happened to me.

On a final note A$549 is way too much to pay - you can get for $100 less than that and even cheaper if you want to get it online from somewhere beginning with A.

I am in Australia as well

  • It is a good watch, limited by software. My biggest 2 gripes are:

    1. it does not have open water swimming, hiking, HIIT, and other relatively often used sport activities (while it does have SUP which almost one one uses), and

    2. it does not have resume later option in run//bike/walk activities (so it automatically saves after 15 min pause) which is nonsensical limitation.

  • Hey...  I use SUP, which does lead me to my gripe.  The pulse detection falls down for me when my pulse gets above 110-ish.  But being well into the Garmin world, I have a HR monitor strap lying around, which the vivoactive will pair with nicely.  That was a good solution.

I agree with Mike T that the sleep tracking is pretty average.  My old fitbit does that much better.

Aside from that, as the OP of this thread, I probably should report back 3 years later.  I use my VA4 24x7, well, except for charging which is around every 6 days or so.  Very clear display which works well for my 56 yo eyes.  Very happy with it.
