Locked Out !

I'm an established Garmin user just bought and used the Venu X1 for my first pool swim ....

Things did not go so well.

I started the swim and the screen was locked during the activity automatically.  A minor inconvenience not being able to change screens from that default shown   (not including distance!) to say another one during activity.

HOWEVER

After Swim the screen is still locked and there is no **&@^@& way to unlock it.

Short pressing top right and bottom right buttons works to start and stop and lap activity which I dont want

Long press top right or bottom right buttons does what I programmed them to do in non activity modes ie for me  top right = control  (the equivalent of the circular panel on say my 970 press and hold top left)

Long press bottom right switches on and off the LED light.

30 minutes later I and the whole [tech savvy] family has had a go at unlocking.  We looked at the online manual

https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-C144B465-A0C8-4FE9-AFE6-41A3FE3F1D9A/EN-US/Venu_X1_OM_EN-US.pdf

We tried tapping and holding, and swiping down for touch lock.  NO WORKY

We held and pressed the two buttons together , very long time.  We managed to summon 'crash assistance' and eventually powered off the watch

Now I pressed top right and the blue triangle is there for over 5 minutes now,  so the watch does not even seem to be rebooting correctly.

Main question is   :  How should I have unlocked the watch

Sub Question is:  When the Blue triangle of boot seems to be the blue triangle of death, is there a recommended recovery action?

  • Okay watch is rebooted BY:   Holding top right to power off and then power on , in just the same way as before, but this time it boots past the blue triangle.

So now booted and surprisingly the swim activity is saved.  Sort of good, but if I have to go thru powering off the watch to save a swim activity,  seems like a bug to me.

One random thing,  I have a freebie non Garmin Watch face installed, though that would influence the behaviour of the buttons and screen actions whilst in the middle of a garmin swim activity is surely not relevant, but mention for completeness

BTW  now booted I can confirm

  • Think of you Touch the Screen at the top and hold a lock should appears which you can drag down and the lock changes to unlocked, so should the watch. Missed it at first a few times too.

  • Yes well,  so I tried another swimming activity, stopped it.  then sure enough,  NOT AS BEFORE,  and yes according to the manual which I previously did read,  pressing at top middle of screen even when there is no lock displaying, then displays a lock and a vertical bar downwards, and you move your finger down that and it unlocks.

But it did not happen previously.

And i note that this Application Lock is different from the device lock.

So I put it down to a glitch.  Hmm.

  • Just had exactly the same happen. First outing with the watch, and had to reboot to recover from this. Same thing where the blue triangle of death stayed for a long time, did another reboot and everything is there.

    I have a face-it watch face installed.

  • Today i had that exact same behavior. Wasn't able to unlock my watch since the unlock bar wasn't showing up. I had to restart my watch twice as well until it was usable again.

  • Hello all,

We have other reports of this and are actively investigating.  When we know more or have any updates to share, I'll be posting to this thread.  Thank you in advance for your patience with us while we conduct this investigation.

  • Yes, same problem here. Had it happen on 3 swims. However, I did try a short one and that seemed to work properly.  So looks it's like it fails after a longer time.

  • I've just come back from my second swim with my Venu X1. Both times I've experienced this failure of the lock screen function. I appreciate that the team is investigating and I look forward to an update.

The work around I have found is to take the watch off and plug it in to my computer. At that point the general lock screen comes up. The screen then responds to touch input again. I can unlock with my PIN then when it goes back to the activity screen the blue swipe down lock reappears and I can unlock and save the activity.

Like I noticed that the blue swipe down lock was working in an early part of my swim but during the course of using the auto rest feature and the lap start button it disappears. My swim routine consists of different intervals, drills and sprints which I like to record as separate activities but I can't currently end an activity and start a new one while I'm in the pool.

  • I discovered another option, hold the power button for about 20 seconds, past the 'emergency contact' page, it will eventually turn off.  When you turn it on again the activity is still live. You can then unlock and do whatever you need.

  • I'll give that a go at my next swim as that might give me what I want when in the water. Thanks
