Venu 3 : Resting heart rate not taken into account in heart rate zones

My initial post has been strangely moved to the Garmin Connect Web section !

I'm reposting this topic with additional details :

I have the latest firmware v7.07 on my Venu 3.

In my user profile, I've set the following data regarding heart rate :

  • max heart rate : 200 bpm
  • resting heart rate : custom value of 60 bpm
  • regarding the zones, I've left the default value for each zone :
    • zone 1 : 50%
    • zone 2 : 60%
    • zone 3 : 70%
    • zone 4 : 80%
    • zone 5 : 90%

I've made a run and the zones are defined as following :

    • zone 1 : 100 - 119 bpm
    • zone 2 : 120 - 139 bpm
    • zone 3 : 140 - 159 bpm
    • zone 4 : 160 - 179 bpm
    • zone 5 : 180 - 200 bpm

So the zones in bpm are defined only with the maximum heart rate.

I would expect the zones to use the heart rate reserve (maximum heart rate - resting heart rate).

And on the Venu 3, there is no choice to use only the maximum heart rate or the heart rate reserve.

Am I missing something ?

  • The workaround would be to set manually the % of max heart rate to the target value (of reserve heart rate) for each zone.

    In my case :

    • 65% (of 200 bpm) to target 130 bpm for zone 1
    • 72% to target 144 bpm for zone 2
    • ...

But it's not so simple. Each zone has a limited range :

    • for zone 1,  the % cannot exceed 59%.
    • for zone 2, it cannot exceed 69%
    • ...

So I cannot use my real maximum heart rate ...

And I have to use a fake maximum heart rate of 220 to accommodate the limited % range for the zones.

    @Garmin, please :

    • make the Venu 3 take into account the resting heart rate
    • or at least, extend the % range for each zone to make them really usable

    Thanks.

  • I Don't think that the zones have a limited range.

The bounds limitation of a zone is linked to the lower bound definition of the next zone.

If you have defined 60% for the lower bound of zone 2, the lower bound of zone 1 will be limited to 59% and its upper bound will be limited to 60%.

Following the discussion we have in this post, I have defined a max heart rate of 170 bpm and the following zones limits: 64-71%, 71-78%, 78-85%, 85-93%, 93-100%.

To be able to enter these numbers, you have to change zone 5 first, then zone 4 and so on.

The upper bound of zone 5 is limited to 100%.

  • My mistake. You're absolutely right.

I don't know why I started to modify the zones from zone 1 !

At least, we have a workaround that makes sense.

  • Guys looking for help on this. I’m trying to set my HR zones. I’ve managed to set them on the main HR page, however I’m finding when I go into running to set the HR zones there, it’s limiting me to 59% minimum in zone 1 and 69% minimum in zone 2. I’ve tried this multiple times and going from zone 5 downward, still limiting it.

    Any ideas?

it is allowing me to just use default HR for the specific running and cycling HR. Now does that mean it will use the zones I have set in the normal HR page, or will it be what the zones were set at originally before I changed them!?

  • The minimum % in zone 1 depends on your Resting HR and your Maximum HR.

It must correspond to a HR above your Resting HR.

For me : Maximum HR = 200, Resting HR = 60 which is 30% of my Maximum HR.

So I must set the minimum % in zone 1 at least to 31%.

NB : I've set manually my Resting HR.

  • thanks. My issue is with increasing my HR %.

So zone 1, for example, I’m wanting to set to 63%-70%, however the maximum lowest value I can enter is 59%, so I can’t get to the 63%. If that makes sense?

  • Your zone 1 lower bound and upper bound are limited by the zone 2 bounds, and so on.

By default, the zone 2 lower bound is 60%. So your zone 1 lower bound or upper bound cannot be higher than 60%.

You have to set the bounds starting from zone 5 to zone 1.

I've made the same mistake. Take a look at the post from user 7932455 in this thread for further explanation.

I guess that's the reason why the settings for the HR zones are presented in this decreasing order.
