Venu 2 charging slowly since recent firmware update

I've noticed that my Venu 2 now charges the battery much slower than it used to. Think it's since one of the recent firmware updates. I always used to be able to plug it in for a daily top up and about 20 mins would be sufficient to replenish the battery. Now it's taking a lot longer. Recently I let it run down over several days (My venu 2 is about 18 months old and I've no issue with how long a charged battery is lasting), and it took about 2 hours to charge back up to full from about 15%. It used to do a full charge in about an hour, or less.

Is this an intentional change? I notice some cryptic comments in the firmware update notes about 'changes to preserve the lifespan of the battery'. Seems they've maybe slowed down the charging current to put less stress on the battery. Not sure if that'll make any difference, but the slower charging is certainly a bit frustrating.

  • Why... you only need to charge it once in 5 till 7 days.

A Phone with fast charge that is charged every Day works fine for 3 years. So a watch that is charge less wil work for many years more

  • I guess they slowed down the animation of UI and the battery charging on purpose to stimulate users to buy Venu 3, lol Slight smile

  • Hello,

Can we go back and reinstall old software so that all the problems are resolved?

  • Because I don't charge once every 5 to 7 days - I charge mine for 15 minutes every morning while I shower. That used to be sufficient to keep the battery topped up. Now it isn't.

By your assertion - a phone that's fast charged every day lasts 3 years, that's 900+ charging cycles since most phones are nearly flat after 24hrs. 900 charging cycles on a Venu 2 would be equivalent to over 12 years lifetime (as a minimum, given your 5 days). I don't think any of us are expecting our Garmin devices to last that long? Also, a phone can easily by charged whilst in use, or overnight when not in use. But my Venu 2 is on my wrist for 97% of the day, during which time it can't be on charge.

  • I've noticed the same issue. I'd usually charge my Venu 2 while getting ready in the morning (30ish minutes) when the battery got down to about 2 days charge left, and I'd usually get 4-5 days charge back in that time. Then starting a few weeks ago I need to charge for hours to get back to near 6-7 days charge.

  • Since the last update I noticed and tested :

     - unloading between 100% and 20% is normal =approximately 7-8 days

     - between 20% and 10%: approximately 2-3 hours

     - after 10% the watch turns off in a few minutes

I can't believe my battery failed overnight especially when an update was done

I would like to go back to the old version which worked very well for me.

  • My Venu 2 has had a couple more firmware updates recently, and is now running 16.11. But there's no mention of what changes 16.11 on the beta section, so no idea what's different over 16.10? But it's still charging slowly, no improvement over whatever Garmin have done in recent changes.

Done a bit more testing on my watch. It now charges at 125mA up to about 75-80% and then progressively decreases as it approaches capacity (which is fine). But at those currents it would take 2.5 hours for a full charge. Never measured charging times before, but gut feeling is that it's at least twice as long as it used to be.

  • It’s so sad. And Garmin just ignore that.

  • The truth is that they care are at all. We've been reporting these issues for months now and they don't even reach out to us to investigate the problem. Each firmware they release is worse than the previous one. They released Venu 3 only a few months after the problem started, which makes us think that they did it on purpose. I'm seriously considering starting a lawsuit. We deserve a proper customer service.

  • All,

If your watch is still not fully charging, please reach out to your local Garmin Support team to discuss available options for you.
