Consdering buying s2 - should I? Also - might a new model come out?

Sorry I appreciate similar questions have come up before. I track my weight daily using a renpho scale and used to use smartscalesync to send the data to connect, but it became very unstable at syncing.

I've thought about getting the s2 for a long time and it's the best price I've seen it atm (£99) - it seems debatable to accuracy but overall looks like it's pretty decent.

But I would hate to spend this much only for a new one to come out - does anyone think that's likely?

Thanks and have a great day!

  • I think weight is accurate and reliable. I don’t care a lot about the other metrics. It synchs quite fine, I use it every day and don’t have problems.
What should a new one bring that spoils the old one? The only thing: they could come with a low cost option only providing weight and synch for 30€

  • I bought it - it was £99 and they gave me a £15 discount on top so £84. It seems good and is very convenient.

  • I have one; and would not buy one again. My batteries died; so put new ones in, and now the units are stuck in "stones". I cannot change it back to Kg or Lbs, no matter what I try. I have done all the tricks (tried to reset it, unpair it to phone, and not cant pair back etc, etc). Reset button does not work. Highly frustrating. I threw it away and got an old fashioned non-electronic scale. In their effort to create a sleek and sexy looking scale (with only 2 buttons ... oh, how sleek), Garmin seemed to forget that the scale actually has to work reliably.  A bathroom scale should work effortless, and should not make you struggle so much and for so long. I wonder who in Garmin actually designs and tests their devices. This has left a bad taste in my mouth.

  • I would read the 1 star reviews on Amazon.  There are some fundamental flaws in this product that you should consider before purchasing:

    1. Switching profiles is archaic (most scales know who steps on it without having to specify the profile)
    2.  Activating the scale requires a silly tap danice...you can't just step on it.
    3.  In order for more than 1 person to use the scale, they have to be invited into the ecosystem via Garmin Connect and create an account
    4.  Burns through batteries

I love Garmin products (I have an Epix 2 and a Garmin HRM-Pro chest strap and a Garmin 67i GPS device).  This scale abysmally fails to meet the standard.

  • 1. if there is a significant weight difference between users, the Index 1 and S2 both recognise the user correctly. I have 3 accounts: Wife, daughter (4yo) and me and it works for us just fine. The little one was added because she once messed up my wife’s account playing on the scale and then the scale thought it was my wife stepping on it.
    2. Ok, if that’s a con, its a con for you. Takes 3s to tap it once, no dance required. It calibrates and you step on it
    3. No, they can just weight and see their weight. I would bet that on every other smart scale you also need to use an account for advanced metrics because the height of the user is required to calculate the data.
    4. One set of good quality batteries every year with daily use.

I think those scales are way to expensive and Garmin should release one wich only tracks weight for around 30-45€. But the critics you listet from Amazon are totally unrealistic.

  • Would not buy - far too tempermental to be used on a daily basis. Some days you get a weight quickly, other dyas you can wait minutes for it to decide on your weight.  In my opinion, very expensive rubbish.

  • I am in the same boat considering to buy the S2, biggest plus for me is the automatic sync with Garmin Connect, but the price is quite high and the reviews mixed.

Sadly Garmin doesn’t announce release dates, the S2 is around ~ 2 years old, The predecessor (Index S1) was on the market for ~2.5–3 years before the S2 arrived.

maybe this year comes a new version, maybe not…

  • The good part is that the S2 will add your weight to Connect.  The annoying part is the time taken to be able to get weighed - will it start up with a gentle tap or does it need a good kicking to get going - varies despite the unit always staying on the floor in the same place.  Occasionaly you just get an egg timer display and that is when I give up...
I personally wish I had never bought the device but am stuck with it as daughter will not return the "old and dumb" scales I passed on to her that just "worked"!

  • It's over five years old. It came out in October 2020.
