Fat percentage high

Just purchased an s2 smart scale and quite surprised to see it gives me a fat percentage of 25. No way is that even close. Not trying to blow my own horn too much but I work hard on endurance fitness and recently finished a 50km ultra in the top 3rd percentile in a field of 1500. I am 44 and have clear muscle definition all over so to be placed as near obese is kind of a joke

I purchased this hoping to get some useful tracking but this is kind of pointless.

Is this a bad batch thing, or are these scales just a highly priced gimmick?

  • This has been an issue since the S2 was released. Some report improvement to body fat metrics after the most recent update to version 3.11. But many are still having issues. I find the weight is accurate and I like having it automatically synched to Garmin Connect. I don't pay any attention to the other metrics. I assume you excepted more than that. I'd contact Garmin support or return the device to the seller.

Several related threads, such as s2 body fat not accurate

  • ehhhe, "has been an issue"

I'd say rather: it provided completely arbitrary data on BF for years :D

I really wondered whether there was a BF detector in the device at all

but it's good to see that something has changed

  • We have two Garmin "Smart" Scales: an S1 in the UK and an S2 for our place in the sun.

Both are up to date with software and despite what Garmin said about fixing it in version 3.00, we're now at 3.11 and it's still markedly different between the two (and if anything it's worse on the latest version).

In June in the UK my body fat was 21-22% and now in the Canary Islands it's leapt up to 26-28%.  Looking at the peaks and troughs over the last few years and lo and behold they correlate perfectly with when we're in the UK or the Canaries.

    Absolutely useless!

  • It’s a gimmick. Sad cause I’m a garmin loyalist. I’m not sure any scale can reliably measure bf%. Go get a dexa scan if you want to keep track. Dexa has me at 19% and garmin s2 has me at 24% and the garmin doesn’t change much. Going for my second dexa scan soon and interested to see the change

  • Just got a S2 today but kept the "s1" to compare...

    Body fat on
    - S1 = 21.8% (it was 26% 5 month ago)
    - S2 = 24.5% (I was so disappointed that I ordered a large pizza and cried while eating it)
