Index S2 issues (poor data accuracy, "laggy" screen, weather issues,...)

To keep this post short here are my issues with Scale S2:

1.) Poor measurement data accuracy

  • I step on a scale shows a measurement, after that I take a bottle of water (250 ml = 250 g = 0,25 kg) and weigh myself again. Weight stays the same as the measurement without the bottle....
  • Algorithm for body metrics is a simple one and should not be on a $160 product if a $40 Xiaomi scale can beat it and is more accurate! (for example on Garmin if you change your birthday by a couple of years your body fat% will change drastically; this issue is also posted on the forum by other people)
  • If I have multiple people registered to the scale it only compares to match them by weight and not by other factors (like body fat%, muscle mass,...)
  • No Visceral body fat measurement! (again $40 Xiaomi scale has that)

2.) Laggy screen

  • When the scale is switching between showing body composition metrics after you weight your self the transition between screens is very laggy and I would expect for a $160 scale to work nicely and smoothly.
  • And not just laggy screen... I don't understand why I still have to enter 4 letters for my "name"... the scale can display my full name from Garmin profile without a problem...

3.) Weather issues

  • This "bug" became known recently but basically no weather data is fetched and the scale looks like this:

  • Weather data si not accurate. It's a shame that I can't enter location manually in Garmin Connect app so that weather data would be more accurate, because for me it is always a couple of degrees off and pretty much shows useless data.

4.) Garmin Index S2 scale icon is not shown in Garmin anymore

  • From the pictures below you can see that anywhere on Garmin Connect the image of the watch isn't shown anymore... this started happening recently.

Final thoughts: For $160 I am expecting at least an accurate, properly working scale that actually justifies a price of $160. I had the previous scale (Garmin Index - their first smart scale) and build quality of the new one is worse, but the data accuracy did improve just a little bit on the new one. Before I bought my first Garmin Scale I had a Xiaomi smart scale 2 and it was amazing with 0 problems. The only reason I keep using this Garmin scale is because I want all data in one app. I hope Garmin fixes these issues since they are mostly software.

If you had any issues with the scale please comment below cause I want to see just how bad this product really is. And I am saying bad because it is priced at $160... if the price was reasonable for what you get it wouldn't be that bad.

  • Same here - I am not getting the weather or extra data any more.  I have only had the scale for ten months.

  • I hear you and I agree with you

spent 1600$ between scale + epix I expect better quality

    • +1, Agree with 's observations - issues with all aspects of this scale - seems to be one step forward and 4 or 5 steps back from the original Index at this point.
    • S2 reads me at ~16-18%/PBF .. I am 9.3% per recent DEXA, closer with InBody 570, S2 is similar to EVOLT 360
    • The Garmin algorithm is suboptimal for me, may be for many - all reading are significantly off vs recent DEXA
    • I don't care about the weather #disabled_that, but if you advertise it [Garmin] it should work!
    • Consecutive readings are off, scale is slow to respond at times, literally too many issues to list them all... $16 or $160 or free (Index upgrade) - bad data is bad data and more than not useful, it is actually counterproductive to some portion of the Garmin User collective.

    Edit + scale info:

    • Software is up to date — Version 2.08
    • Synced Friday, Apr 1 at 06:00
  • +1 Hi, I'm from France and I also have some of your issues with my scale. It is too expensive for such low precision.

    1/ Poor measurement accuracy
Body fat percentage accuracy is a shame. Between to measurements spaced by 10 min the scale can give me results from 18 to 22%.
Even if I don't know my real body fat percentage I think it can't be so high. I'm 182cm fo 73Kg for about 5 to 6 sport hours per week.

    2/ Laggy screen

The display change speed is low but maybe it's a choice of the developers.

    3/ Weather issues
Same "bug" since 1 or 2 week the scale can not display weather data.

4/ Garmin Index S2 scale icon is not shown in Garmin anymore
It works good for me but I think Garmin picture database is not very releabe. My fenix 6 is a saphir/tinanium with orange strap. For a time Garmin Connect display it in grey and orange, now it is black like a standard fenix 6.

    5/ Other issue: units
Despite my choice scale is unable to display day/month instead of month/day.

Software is up to date - Version 2.12
I use Kg (and celcius) units.

  • just received and installed my Index S2. I noticed all of your points as well. I had a Withings Body+ before but crashed the glass. So I thought "why don't you buy the S2 to have all data in Connect right away"...

What a shame. If my problems do not disappear, I will send it back to Amazon...

  • I agree with your points, thought the cheap xiaomi scale also had the "bottle/no bottle=same weight" problem. It also underestimated my BF% by about 4%.

This is about the same what is happening on the S2. I've took measurements with an inBody something machine at the gym (7am in the morning, nothing eaten and nothing drunk) and am apparently at around 12-13% BF. The S2 overestimates it to 17-18%.

The technology is simply too inaccurate, because it can only measure the impedance over your legs. I think "cheating" the scale by changing you age is a bit overkill since it throws the metrics off. It will never be as accurate as measuring separate body parts, so I just take the trend instead of absolute numbers into account.

The price is way too high for what the scale offers, that's true. The low-refresh display looks especially cheap, I thought the scale was defective when I first saw it. All you really get is direct sync of your data to garmin connect. Is it worth it? Not sure.

To be honest, I am only using it because it was a gift.

  • The laggy screen is really frustrating. I had a Fitbit scale before and even that worked better. It was just one colour display, but I'd take that over the low frames on this. My partner still has issues scrolling through all the guest profiles to reach his name. Cannot remove them.
