Body Fat % on Index S2 Smart Scale Seems Inaccurate

My new scale seems to give me a wildly different reading than my old one. I was previously using a Weight Guru's scale which gave me a body fat percentage between 18 and 19 percent which seems reasonable given my overall weight and fitness level. The new Garmin scale shows me over 26% body fat. Both scales show identical weight so what gives with the wild body fat numbers?

  • Reducing the age setting and increasing the activity level setting are currently the only ways to get anything like an accurate reading. This is a ridiculous situation.

Garmin should be embarrassed that their forum is being used to discuss alternative brands of scales.

  • small correction - "Reducing the age setting and increasing the activity level setting are currently the only ways to get anything like an accurate number" - its not really a reading since you've effectively told it the number to give. there's no value in that.

if you don't conform to societal averages then these scales will not give you the right numbers since they don't actually measure anything other than weight.

for me, i must be a complete freak as even setting my age to 20 (actual 45) and max activity level i still get a bit higher than actual BF%

tanita and withings representatives should come on here and market their products. if they could find a way to upload the results in to garmin connect for those of us still using other garmin devices then they would have a lot of new customers!

  • I certainly wasn't saying that by fudging the age/activity level settings you then have accurate scales, you do not, it just gives a reading that possibly shows the correct figure at that particular point in time. The scales are basically useless - apart from the weight reading.

  • I think you are right. If I put my age to 18 I have 15.5% and if I do 50 I am 22.3%. So that is just algo not measurement. I wish they would fix it as I have other scales that measure me at 15-17% but got this one to integrate with Garmin connect, but, now can’t use it at all.

  • One more you can change is your Haight, it's also can effects ur body fat. More haight mean less body fat. What  shame methods to fix problrms

  • I use the Omron blood-pressure monitor for 3 years, and the android software is actually good.

I´m looking into the Omron Viva which is a Clinically Validated device using Bio-electric Impedance (BIA) Analysis Technology to assess the body’s composition.

It is expected to provide precise results which were confirmed by medically approved golden standard methods of analysis.

  • Thanks for the warning Garmin-Kevin, but there really would not be any need for links to other brands if Garmin fixed or replaced these defective S2 scales!

  • Kevin, you'd better give any feedback on the main issue!

  • Hi, can you allow us to calibrate the body fat percentage?! I got measured in a bod pod and would happily put that data in to calibrate the Garmin and give it an accurate base line to work from. Presently the scales show me as 10% over my measured body fat.
