Body Fat % on Index S2 Smart Scale Seems Inaccurate

My new scale seems to give me a wildly different reading than my old one. I was previously using a Weight Guru's scale which gave me a body fat percentage between 18 and 19 percent which seems reasonable given my overall weight and fitness level. The new Garmin scale shows me over 26% body fat. Both scales show identical weight so what gives with the wild body fat numbers?

  • Thanks.

Argh, my phone does not do ANT+..

  • All scales that measure body parameters by passing a tiny current between the feet will not be super accurate because the current takes the easiest path. ie. up one leg and down the other. So only part of the body is measured. But the Garmin scale does not measure anything. If it actually measured something changing your age would not affect body parameters because a measurement is a measurement.

According to the S2 my body fate is 26.4% and I'm obese. At 175cm, 63kg, 76cm waist I beg to differ. A recent medical check-up measured by body fat at 13.9%. That's a margin of error for the S2 of 90%!

Don't waste your time using the S2. You will get a more accurate estimate of a your body fat by looking in the mirror.

  • I must say that we users are the unpaid Garmin´s Quality Control, usability, software, reliability testing department, where products were potentially released to fast, before proper testing.

Being an active Gamin user since 2002, this is my list of (to fast released)  products:

    • Index S1 Smart Scale => Connections (Wifi) issues
    • Index S2 Smart Scale => Body Fat% issues
    • Vector pedals               => battery issues
    • Garmin Connect          => unable to delete sports (golf) that I don't play and other random issues such As FTP calculations, VO2 etc
    • Fenix 3                           => several random battery drains
    • Fenix 6x pro                   => several unkown battery drains, Unreliable GPS recording,
    • Edge 800                       => several windows connections problems

and several Tacx issues, but this was already before Garmin.

For the above mentioned issues, it is somewhat really pain in the.... to continue motivated.

But I like the Garmin Ecosystem.

I still want to use the S2 for weight measurements, and I would like to propose a deal with Garmin. Let us users continue to use the S2, be proper reimbursed and when the S3 is released. We will buy the S3 with proper discount, and continue further testing for you guys.

The users that don't complain about the issues, for sure are the users that do not properly work out, or have the knowledge to challenge the obtained results. And the users that are "real", high level or pro athletes for sure use better tools than this weighing scale.

Knowing that this product is lacking, nonconforming product!!!!

Garmin should know better and perform a proper recall/stop shipment and conduct a proper failure investigation taking appropriate corrections and preventive/corrective actions.

I personally would be embarrassed if I was the Quality Assurance/Compliance/Control end responsible. As long there are still unaware users that buy the scale. They still make some money.

    Stocks are going down

  • I agree, with dave_TTT. I just wish mainstream media would pick up on this so Garmin will feel the pressure and actually do something about this. Product recall, stop sale, or reimbursement. More people should be made aware of this, it's like daylight robbery. If Garmin is saying that there are users that are not complaining then that means they are not aware that the data they are getting is wrong. The real power users know that the results are incorrect based on multiple data comparisons.

  • It would be nice if known Vloggers/ Youtubers picked up this, such as: GCN, DC Rainmaker, GPLama, Desfit etc etc Picked up this.

On a weekly basis I have contact with Garmin the Netherlands, due to my previous experiences. I have a open communication with them, but still no official answer from headquarters. The costumer service have an "opinion" which I wont disclose here. Their hands are tied and the script is to return to the seller, since it doesn't make sense to exchange for another, since it is also a nonconforming product.

Its a bit the same effort/replies as from @Garmin-Kevin

  • They won't because they are on a paycheck or agreement. I've bought S2 more than a year ago after Ray's review. I've never expected that S2 may be so faulty, even the S1 scale displays the BF% comparable with other scales.
Here is what Ray replied to my comment regarding S2 issues.
As you can check in his review he has never stated that S2 is faulty or displayed a significant difference in BF%, even if you compare BF% to the S1.
    You can check this thread

Body fat: More than double compared to Index S1 (19% vs 8% - the 8% is correct

Here is Ray's reply to my suggestion to clarify/retest S2.

  • I would like to be added. Mine also shows 7pp increase over last scale.

  • If you have a Tablet, especially the Samsung range up to the S6, then that has ANT+ and you can install the ANT+ Weight App their.

  • Kind of feels like people are missing the point with recommending alternatives, I want my body fat to not only be accurate but also for it to go into Garmin Connect, so unless there is an alternative that does this, we really need to put the onus back into Garmin don’t we!!!

  • Basically that is the same reason as for sticking to Garmin S2, I could not find an alternative that uploaded to GC
