Cars following losing white dot

On my ride this afternoon I noticed that when cars approached the white dot progressed towards the top , however if they followed for a short while the White dot disappeared. I think the dot should stay till the car passes as it is easy to not notice a car behind when looking at the Edhe 1000
  • It is likely that if the cars are following you that they are not exceeding the approach speed used to determine if you should be notified. Based on my use the target needs be approaching you at speed that is 5 mph or more greater than your speed. A vehicle traveling at the same speed as you will not get reported.

I think this is dangerous, the car approaching is tracked from 140 m behind to closely behind then the dot disappears. If a car follows for a distance it is easy to look down at the Edge and think all is clear behind.
  • Perhaps you should explain why you think this is dangerous?

Why should a car not be behind you and tracking at your speed? The danger is if it is approaching you at speed as this is an indication that perhaps it hasn't seen you. You can't rely on a device for everything, and provided a car is following me and I know it's there that is sufficient. If I'm intending to manoeuvre I look behind anyway, as presumably you do too?

It could be argued that spending too much looking at your handlebars and not being aware of you surroundings is dangerous. :p

I don't have an issue with a car behind me. My issue is that the Varia display shows cars approaching but then stops displaying them when they are travelling behind. What I am saying is the dot should continue to be displayed when a car is following and drop off when the car passes. If you don't agree please explain why it's right to stop displaying the dot.

  • Well you said it was dangerous. Whether the dot should continue to display or not is another issue. I have no feelings either way.
  • I have also noticed that annoying fact. In my opinion it also can be bit misleading and dangerous - i spent 6 hours with Varia but already found myself relying on its capabilities ... because it works really good. I am not saying that i am not paying attention to the traffic and am keeping my eyes on head unit but i am using it. Quick glance and i know what is the situation behind.
I guess that Varia cannot know if the car passed you or not - it just uses timer to assume that the car is already in front you.

SUSSAMB, what are your experiences with Varia? Is it reliable for you? Do you have many "ghost" detects?

I just received my Varia today and will try it out for the first time tomorrow. I understand the frustration with the car disappearing but I think we need to remember what the Varia is what it is not. In a nutshell, it a radar device that picks up objects in it's field of view. In order to be useful for it's purpose, it only selects for display objects that are moving toward us. If it reported static objects, you would get a lot of false alarms. The car that was approaching from behind but has decided to keep pace with us is no different than a tree behind our parked bicycle if we are stopped. The tree or any other fixed object is not something we need to be aware of. So the Varia is probably programmed only to register objects that are moving towards us from behind. What the speed differential between the object and us is, I don't know, but 5 mph does seem reasonable. To get the Varia to do what some have mentioned they would like, is another level of technology, and quite expensive I would imagine. You basically need the device not only to detect an object moving towards us from behind, but to specifically identify and track that object until it is out of the danger area. That is something more complicated than "basic" radar, and probably quite a bit more expensive to package into something that small. It would also probably require a camera along with the radar to do so. Perhaps the next iteration of Varia, depending on how well this version sells for Garmin. Time will tell.

It will be interesting to see what you think once you have ridden , I purchased it for both the light reacting to vehicles in close proximity and also a warning of cars behind me. Not sure what happens to the rear light that flashes quicker when a car is close if it then follows? If a car is on my tail I would like to know on the display.

To test things out I got my wife to follow me tonight and I arranged a signal when the White dot went from my 1000 screen. As she continued to follow me the Varia rear light was still in bike ahead flashing mode although the White dot had disappeared from the 1000.
