Varia 515 - DO NOT BUY! "Light Off, Radar On" does not work and light is too intense with no way to turn it down

I recently purchased a Varia 515 but I'm about to return it. As so many have mentioned, the light is just way too intense and blinds my fellow riders and I have had other riders and even a car pull up beside me and shout at me that the light is too bright and is blinding. I actually agree.

I would be happy to turn off the bloody light and just have the radar function on, but there seems to be a defect with the button software as mentioned in the post linked to below -ie. while the light turns off, it also disconnects the device's bluetooth even though the little status LED on the side of the Vario blinks to show that the device is still on.

Am I missing something, or is this product and the product support just sh1t?

It's a shame because the radar actually works quite well but unfortunately I'm very dissatisfied with this product overall given its cost, will be returning it and giving it a negative product review :(

  • Buy RTL 516 - It meets the German StVzo standard - no flash mode, less light output. And on the 515 you can set the peloton mode. This is also a weaker light mode.

  • I agree!

it left me today without a light and no radar on a busy highway! Very angry as now there will be no support from Garmin due to the holidays! I will be needing to use now during my break from work and it fails me.

The light keeps turning off, it turns on for few seconds and that’s it no response from Varia. Just emailed Garmin.

  • Have you tried the Smart Bike Light Connect app? Using it provides lots of options to control the Varia. For instance, I have mine set to have the light off until a car approaches. Works very well.

  • I will try it, thanks.
The problem is not with the app or the battery it is with the Varia itself.
It connects well to my iPhone and the edge, I also tried to connect it to the edge as a “light” instead of a radar still keeps turning off.
