Varia 510 button failure

I picked up a Varia 510 1.5 years ago.  I've had it out on maybe 20 or so rides as I don't do roads much anymore.  Recently it started cycling itself through light modes - even when not paired with a head unit to control it.  This started 2 weeks ago and today I got tired of it so I pressed the button in to turn it off.  Now the button is stuck down.  I've tried washing it and went around the crevice with a razor to make sure nothing is lodged inside to hold it down.

I contacted support and as I'm outside the 1 year warranty, they want me to ship it in, and play $90 for a replacement (I'd imagine a refurb).

It's possible to get this (older) model on sales for 120-130, so I'm really taken back by this.  Would it be worth calling directly during the weekdays to see if there is a better offer?  Just to be clear, I'm not trying to throw a hissy fit, but rather just weighing out my options.  If I'm going to shell out $90 plus shipping for a 510 replacement I might just opt to pay more and get the 515 so I can use it with my phone when needed.  Or just buy a 510 on sale for a tiny bit more and know that it's brand new.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and what type of replacement experience you had.  If it's a common issue I'd rather not pay to get another, especially with it failing after such little use.

I've had issues with the Edge units...probably had to replace every model I've owned except the 830 so far.  Garmin was generally better about not charging that much for replacements just outside the warranty.

Update - was able to get it working again.  Mounted it in a vice grip, power sprayed, then used a razor blade to wedge down into the button and spend the next 15 minutes trying to pry the button back up.  It eventually gave way and is working again.  i'm hoping that I didn't puncture any water proofing inside the button.  I have to say I'm really not impressed with the design of the button...there's no reason to have a crease like that on something that is obviously going to get dirty.  But for now I'm hopeful that the crisis has been averted.    Fingers crossed, it will stop cycling through modes randomly since I must have cleaned something out of the button.

  • I had the same problem last year, but they offered an out of warranty replacement for free.

thry must like me more. Grin

  • My RTL515 button failed today. Less than 6 months old.

It lost the Light Network mid ride, which I was able to switch the Varia off and on again.

But later in the ride, the Network was lost again, but the on/off button is stuck and doesn't function.

  • Would it be helpful to apply an appropriate lubricant around the switch/power button area as a preventive measure? If so, what would be best product to use...WD40, TriFlow, or some else?

  • Had a similar issue - would get the Varia RTL 510 to turn on but it would turn itself off few seconds later. After following Garmin's directions (wash it with soap and water, scrub with toothbrush, etc) which didn't work, and as it was out of warranty, tried to clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner (only the switch in the water, not the whole unit) and it worked! YMMV, and i guess water may enter the unit, but if nothing else is working may be worth trying

  • There is a silicon cover. Maybe this can help:
