Varia Radar RTL510 Software Update 3.2->3.3 - cannot update

Just recently received this unit. I have it paired with the 520 plus. It seems to work well. However I cannot do the firmware update from 3.2 to 3.3. Aug 8 I called Garmin support and was on the phone with them for over 30 minutes and no resolution. There is now an open help ticket on this but I have heard nothing back from Garmin. Will advise when I do. I sent them a follow-up this morning.

Anyone have luck on doing the firmware update?

  • PC running Windows10. Watch this space. I'll try to update to 3.4 and I bet it doesn't work.

    Ha. First attempt using Garmin Express refused to update to 3.4. Unplugged it, power cycled it. Plugged it back in, and it worked second time.

    I noticed the same. I selected "install All" as the first one is the light, the second one is the radar, wasn't sure about the third. As mentioned above, the first attempt failed. I unplugged, plugged in, tried again, success.
    What I didn't notice until looking at your screen shot, I suspect the third one is a combination of the first two, looking at the sizes, its pretty close to 1st+2nd = 3rd.
    I'm going for a 3-4 hour ride tomorrow, fingers crossed it's all good.

    I'm still not able to update my device from 3.3 to 3.4 via Garmin Express. The files get copied to the device, but they do not load on restart. HELP!!!

    You might check that you are on the most recent version of Garmin Express. On windows I am using 6.8.1.0. Once you open express in the top right corner click on the cog and then about.

    Then try downloading and restarting again. I would do the download and restart either way as peterlip8_ reported thats what worked for him. If that does not work call support. That is what I did originally and how the help ticket was started

    Btw I install all updates and nothing outstanding now

    Thanks for the advice. I updated Garmin Express, but the update still will not work. Looks like I'll be calling Garmin support.
  • Mine refused to update as well...until today. It would get to the point where it told you to unplug it and power cycle it but I would do that with no joy. Today I tried again with version 3.4 and chose install all (3 updates.) But what I might have done different was let it sit after installing the update. After sitting for what seemed like a minute or two the light on the side of the radar turned on and began blinking between green and blue. That continued for a minute or two and then it turned back off. After that was done I power cycled it on, then off, and plugged it back into the computer. The computer confirmed it was updated. Perhaps before I should have left it sit for a while after unplugging it from the computer?

    Ok, that had me cracking up. Good luck on the visit.
    I was biking to work in the earlier part of the year, about 18 km. I brought work clothes with me so totally get it, Have a huge checklist to ensure I have everything.

    Hopefully out Sunday to check update on sensitivity.

    We have both of these issues reported for investigation.


    Not so, my new Varia is on 3.20 and absolutely refuses to budge to 3.40 no matter how hard I try to update it. Please assist
  • I've just taken delivery of my 510 today on firmware 3.2. No matter what I do I cannot get the it to update to 3.4.
    GE tells me I have an update & copies the GCD file to the 510..
    I disconnect then power up. There's no indication of a software update taking place.
    I plug the 510 back into the computer & the GCD file has gone & GE tells me I'm still on 3.2 & there's an update available.

    Frustrating indeed & just about ready to send back to the retailer
  • We are investigating the device not updating issues some are reporting. If possible, we would like to get the device XML from those of you who cannot get the device to update past 3.20.

    To access the GarminDevice.xml file:

    PC:
    Connect the Garmin device to the computer
    Press the Windows key + E on the keyboard to open Windows Explorer/File Explorer
    Open the Garmin drive listed
    Open the Garmin Folder
    Right Click the GarminDevice.xml file
    Select Copy
    Right-click on the desktop and select paste
    Add this file to the forum thread or add to a PM
    Mac:
    Connect the Garmin device to the computer
    Open Finder
    Click Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen
    Click Computer
    Open the Garmin drive
    Open the Garmin Folder
    CTRL + Click on the GarminDevice.xml file
    Select Copy "GarminDevice.xml"
    CTRL + click on the desktop and click Paste item
    Add this file to the forum thread or add to a PM
