Issues with Varia Radar halfway through ride

I agree it is dangerous. Did you notice if you had a phone disconnect during your ride? I’m sure the the issue is link to phone disconnects!

The link to the phone is ok, i get smart notification from my Phone.
But i get no notification when i was linked to the rader.Thats unusual.

I have received a refurb RTL500 which pairs with my explore 1000 (both light and radar) but I don’t get any vehicle notification at all and light pattern does not change with passing vehicles. So i have gone from a unit that intermittently stop notification to one that is just a light, both units have newest firmware. I contacted garmin support and they say although slightly different for original problem they are working on a fix and added my name to the ticket. I now just have t wait for the upgrade without any indication of how long this will take.
i would like to down grade the firmware to versions that did work together, so i wonder if you could advise the firmware numbers that i would be best to try. I’m thinking once i have them paired and working i can then upgrade to newest version this should at least get me back to square one.

I was out with a friend today so i got them to pair my RTL500 with their edge 820 and they connected without issue but still no radar reports. So I’m pretty confident the newly refurb unit is faulty.

Interesting, I have the exact same issue with my Varia and an Edge 1000 since a couple of weeks. I had the Varia for over 2 years without any issues before, but I indeed recently paired the phone with the Edge. I do also remember that the Edge notified that the phone was disconnected/reconnected. Will check if this re-occurs when I drop the pairing.

An update here; I did now a 2, 3 and 5 hour ride after I un-paired the phone from the Garmin and I had no Varia Radar issues. I had the Radar turned off a while on the 5h ride though.

Nontheless, I think your hunch R88BUC - that the phone connection drop is the root cause - is correct.

I had a Garmin Edge 1000 I gave to my friend when I got the Edge 1030. He got the Radar and it also quits working 5 miles or so into the ride. The Edge still shows the Radar symbol but the Radar appears to be off. I power the Radar back on then disable then re-enable via the Edge 1000. The rest of the ride no issues. Both have the latest software. In reviewing this blog I had him remove/unpair the Edge 1000 from his phone. This weekend we will try Radar again with simply having it unpaired from the phone. I also noted that via the Garmin Connect app he was using his VivoActive watch as the device for LiveTrack and not the Edge 1000. Not sure if there is some sort of conflict here. Later in the week we will pair the 1000 and radar via his phone and simply change the device used by Garmin Connect app. I never had this issue when using the 1000 and radar however I always used the 1000 as my device being used via Garmin Connect. I do not have any issues with the Radar functionality with the Edge 1030. Hopefully I can figure out how to add to this post to share the outcome of my tests.
