Garmin Express for Mac doesnt see Varia radar

I just got a Varia radar and Garmin Express for Mac doesnt see it when it is plugged into USB. I tried several cables including the one packaged with the radar.
Garmin express works for all my other devices (fenix5s, varia vision, alpha100). Also tried a PC. Any ideas?

Some USB cables are not designed to carry data ... just power. Unfortunately there isn't an indication on the cable itself.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for you help.

There is no GarminDevice.xml file in the Garmin Folder that pops up when connecting the Varia Radar. Not even a hidden one.

I have downloaded the update file and placed it in the folder but it is not installing when switching the radar back on.

How is the update launched exactly ?

When you switch the radar on it should process the update file. The LEDs will light up from left to right to indicate the progress of the installation. Once it is complete I think it powers off.

Guys

Garmin replaced the device and the new device immediately connected to GE when plugged into my Macbook.

OK, so I see I am not the only one.
My problem is, UT800 is not mounted as USB and Garmin software doesn't see it. RTL500, on the other hand, mounts as USB and works fine, I can check firmware version.

So, my question is, is UT800 behaving as expected?
I'm using iMac on High Sierra.

FWIW: Unable to connect to Express from my iMac after several attempts (with a random USB cable). Then tried again with the cable provided with the Varia and all worked fine at the first try!

For the UT800 to show it needs to be in charging mode and you need to use an ANT stick for Garmin Express to see it.

What was the reasoning behind needing an ANT stick to communicate with the UT800?

I don't know is the short answer. I could make some guesses. I don't think there have been any software updates for it since it was released so it should not really be an issue.
