Transfer files, courses from edge

Yes, there was a way of transferring courses (not locations) from one Edge to another. It was a bit rough.

The 1040 (and later Edges) dropped that feature. So, I wouldn't expect it on any other new device.

Outside of the (basically obsolete) device-to-device transfer, there is no way of uploading a course from the Edge. Except by plugging it into a computer.

The support of locations is also a bit rough. It doesn't seem Garmin expects people to want to transfer them to other devices.

I think Garmin BaseCamp will read the locations from a plugged-in device. Copying the locations.fit file is a possibility but it would overwrite any locations on the device it was copied to.

It's unlikely that Garmin is going to change anything about this.

Thank you for confirm. For me seems that Garmin like all data be on the cloud, activities, health stats, trails and so on.

The web/cloud stuff means Garmin only has to write code once.

I'm guessing Garmin dropped the device-to-device transfers because not many people used it. it was kind of rough, and they wanted room for more valuable features.

Keep in mind that you still can muck with the files.

I wrote a "workbench" Windows program that makes mucking with files more convenient. (It does cost $5 but it has a generous 1 month trial.)

One thing it can do is read the locations file and split-out the locations separately. You could then copy these to another device (without overwriting the existing locations).

On Fenix 6 Pro, "create course" feature doesn´t work for me, just makes a straight line. On Explore and Explore 2 works fine and even is more practical in some way. If you have different saved locations, you can add them to the course and preview easily the altitude . Can change the location orders, so change easy have a preview of the course altitude and now, with climbpro a preview of the climbs. You haven´t it on Garmin connect. I mean what you say regarding writing one code, but should be a goal just to can upload a course created on the Explore to connect. You can send from connect to device but from device to connect can all upload activities.  I should be useful to can send courses from Explore to connect since already have that feature working ok on Explore, so could just upload to connect and then sent to Fenix. Of course you can do it the course on connect, but as I said, on Eplore you can preview climpro data, and use already saved locations and combine them easier.

Regarding your windows app, sounds ok,  but is supposed you may be anywhere on the road and not have the computer there.

I suspect the Fenix is a bug.

 The conclusion about "there must be no many people doing that" because if so should be implemented is a fish that bits it´s tail. 

How can most people "use" on a way that can´t be done? you are right that I can see the altitude on Garmin connect, save the  course there and send to devices. You can´t create a course on the device and send to connect, so is imposible to know "how much people want to use it".., in fact I have searched and have found different threads asking about this, and reply was "you can´t",  may other features have bee added from forum suggestions, (unless Garmin diviner, they never could add a feature "used for many people", since is not added yet right?

I can make the course on mobile connect, yes, and the altitude info you are right, but you can´t used saved locations there. I mean, let´s forget the issue of "upload" from edge to connect and see what I want to say.

Most times you may ride or run on a radius from a location, Doesn´t matter if you home or anyother. If you save diferent locations, you could make different courses in the way the "roun-trip" does.  Lets say you have locations A, B, C .D.,E, you can make on the Explore a course like this,   A then C, then B, then D, and try any other combination (in the way the round-trip works, but "custom".  You can do that on the Explore.

 I don´t know if there are other online apps more then the Garmin Connect to create courses on the same way?  On Garmin connect you must search and locate every time a location for a course, instead of just selecting a combination of locations already saved.

From my point of view should be very useful, and many people should use it,  if you think making the courses on the edge is too small screen.., should be nice to can to the same thing online.., I mean use saved locations, combine them for a course, save the course.

 I have read threads asking "I have a lot of course on my edge i shoule like to share" and reply is "you can´t" or must use a computer, with that reply how "many people could be using it"?

Have just tried explore.garmin web.., I remembered it can used saved waypoints and... surprise.. Edge are not compatilbe, why?  Because low edge user used it? They can´t? 

Any other similar web that allow fenix and Edge?

No, it isn't.

Garmin can't provide every feature people ask for. There has to be some way of prioritizing what features to add.

It's not that hard to get reasonable estimates. No one is going to add a feature just to get an actual number. It would be too expensive.

There aren't that many threads about it (as far as I can tell). Garmin certainly doesn't implement every idea posted here. So being a suggestion is clearly not enough.

I've never seen any of these threads. Given that there's a limit of 100 courses, clearly Garmin doesn't think people are archiving courses on their devices.

So, no, there isn't any indication that this would be a widely-useful feature.

What are these locations? I've never created courses this way.

It's an interesting idea. I think you can do it on BaseCamp. But I don't think any of the online course creators let you do this.

Part of the reason is that the Edges can't use "route" files (files that only contain waypoints).

The Explore website is mostly targeting "hikers" and they tend to use devices in a different way than people use Edges.
