Explore 2 touch screen reliability

Hi Guys,

How do you find the quality of the Explore 2 touch screen?

I have this issue which is pretty frustrating that while swiping the map around or while dropping the pin, the map view moves to the unexpected direction, sometimes totally opposite to the direction I swiped.

Happened to me on all of the FW versions and I also went with device factory reset.

Do you experience it too and Garmin qc is lacking or is my device a lemon only?

  • I've never heard of this problem. Keep in mind, though, that the screen has two navigation modes. You switch between them by tapping the symbol in the center of the upper edge.

  • Yes, I know about that - it's either pinned to you location or you can move map freely using that "switch".

What I meant however can be seen in this video:

    https://youtu.be/fZni448XPuA

Start at 3:53 and you'll see that he's scrolling the map and seconds later the map view starts to jump around just as he touches the screen (not to scroll like it should).

I was trying to find some logic in that behavior, but found none.

  • I would say that's normal. And due to the fact that the processor is much slower, the movements are processed with a time lag - overall this type of nagivation is much less convenient than on a smartphone. In fact If I have to do this during the ride, I pull out my phone. My guiess: You'll have to live with it.

  • That would make sense if that happened only when the tiles for the new section are still loading, but that's not the case, as it happens also when the tiles are fully loaded and if I wait a while after that happens.

It appears like somebody who coded the UI couldn't make up his/her mind on how the map should be operated:

    A) scroll to move

    Or

    B) point to the location where map should move

And from time to time option B kicks in. It seems like a bug to me.

So you're saying that you're experiencing the same behavior?

  • Yes. I'm sure you didn't buy a lemon. I use it for rides with imported Garmin routes, so I very rarely scroll. Even zooming in and out is a nuisance - we are spoiled by our phones.

  • Oh man, it seems that I really need to lower my expectations of Garmin.

  • hey man did you ever fix this issue ? I just got my edge explore 2 and it is really frustrating, the screen has a bit of a phantom tap problem, just like you described, can't seem to get my head around it.

  • Hi!

No, I haven't been able to fix this issue. According to what  wrote, it appears that's design flaw. I guess it wouldn't hurt to submit a ticket via Garmin support page. I will do it and you can do it as well, that could help to make Garmin support aware of the issue.
