Request to get rid of the pause icon when at pause

When at Pause, for example when waiting at traffic light, the screen shows a huge pause icon and the screen is dimmed in such an amount that you cannot see the map anymore.

Waiting at traffic light is an ideal moment to check the map, however this huge pause icon with extra dark layer masks the map and keeps coming back after a short period again and again after any tap on the screen. This behavior irritates and can be dangerous because you now have to check the route on a moment when riding is resumed and this distracts your attention which should be on the traffic and not on the screen. Potentionaly risky & dangerous!

Please Garmin can you turn this back to how it worked on the Explore (1) - a short living pause icon and no dimmed screen but a colored border. I've sent a request to Garmin already for this issue, but no reaction and no new firmware...

  • Please see my reply to Bern below

  • I have disabled auto-pause for this exact reason, but that's a really poor solution. Why do I have to disable an obviously useful feature just to overcome a design flaw?

  • It's worse that just wanting to check the map at a traffic light ... suppose you're stopped because you wanted to take a look at the map???  We pull over, huddle over the Garmin to consult the map, and presto!  Map dimmed and giant pause symbol!  Map is useless!  My "solution" is to disable Auto-pause, but not without a certain amount of annoyance that I can't use an obviously useful feature like Auto-pause since to do so makes the map essentially useless.

  • Good News, I got a message from Garmin support. The Autopause sign behaviour will probably be changed in one of the next updates. It is considered to let it pop-up only once. It is a small step for Garmin but a big step for the bike communitiy.

  • Agreed, I love the idea of Auto-Pause, but I too have had to turn it all the way off because of the logo/icon

  • Agree to all of the above. I have the 1030 and my wife recently hot the edge explore 2 as a gift. I was very surprised to see the new (and very annoying) new auto pause behaviour. The might be 'by design', but really very poor design indeed! Won't be upgrading to the 1040 unless this is solved!

  • Hi there,

I will join this topic here as well, although I started same issue in another topic already.
No idea what problems Garmin has with not listening to users/customer. Looks like Garmin developers are not going out and experience the use of their products themselves.

  • For the Edge 1040 series public beta software version 18:15 has been released, including a solution for the Auto Pause issue.

It may be expected that also for the Explore 2 new (beta) software will be released soon. If you like to be the first to try (test) you can opt-in for the Beta Program through Garmin Connect (web).
Up to now not seen any new (beta) software for the EE2 since 9.07.

  • I think they should invest in interface design anyway, it really needs some modernising. For instance, the state of the device (pausing, activity type, etc) could go to a collapsing banner on the top (with an option to make it bigger if needed) like on Android, for instance.

  • Hi to you all,

So far I have not seen any update showing the pause icon being (partially) removed, have you?

Any of you who has seen any changes and/or updates?
