Software update - Is this normal !

Just bought the Explore 2 , all seems to be working OK except when connected to the phone it seems to be constantly syncing. Couldn't work out why, but if I look at the System/About section, the software version shows as 4.10 and the update note says no updates available, but both these sections are greyed out. When I go to Garmin Connect it tells me that new version 5 is available, but in Garmin Express with device connected that doesn't show, only a map update seems to be available and that refuses to load coming back with an error. What I'm wondering is if the firmware update has started over Connect, hence why its greyed out on the device, and not showing in Express. What do you think ? I read somewhere that software/firmware updates can load in connect in the background, but can take quite a time i.e t said up to a week (I guess it depends how long you have the device connected to the phone for).  Adrian

  • Garmin has not "announced" the contents of the Explore 2 5.09 release in the Explore 2 sub-forum as they do for other devices, was there much worthwhile in the release, I assume (hope as a prospective user) that Explore 2 fixes / enhancements will trickle down from the 1040 (& later 540/840) devices as the software seems to be a subset of the 1040 SW and the UIs are the same.

  • @britswed If you send me a P.M. with your E-mail adress I maybe can help you.

  • thanks for the offer of help, but after a very frustrating morning and several contacts with Garmin support, I packed it up and returned.

  • I'm sure iit will be great, I should probably have waited a wheel until there were more users and support was across any new issues

  • When you are checking availability and lead time on the Edge Explore 2, make sure you do not select the "powered mount bundle," because that is 5-8 weeks away still. But you should be able to get the "non-powered mount" Edge Explore 2 now.

  • Try to use express when updating. It will most likely save you from any syncing issues. Also, if it repeatedly says there is an update, there may be multiple updates it needs to install in sequence.  I don’t think it installs just the last update. Yesterday, I plugged into my computer and there were 3 updates i performed on my new E2 via express. At first I thought it was stuck in a loop but I kept track of the version number and sure enough, it kept going up. However, there was nothing that was blatantly obvious to tell me that it needed to install multiple updates…unless you looked at the version number and who looks at that? That’s what you’re probably experiencing on your phone, yikes!  Garmin really needs to tighten up their User Experience. This one issue alone must generate hundreds if not thousands of support tickets. That’s a lot of money that’s being spent on something that can be resolved with a few additional words: ”…installing multiple updates…”

  • If only - it wasn’t taking or recognising the need to update. So it’s back to my old 820, until I decide what to do. Interestingly when I looked at the directory in the Garmin, there were files there from a couple of days before I purchased it, so I’m wondering if it had been played with beforehand. Anyway, it’s on it way back to the retailer.

  • Sorry to hear that. Aside from the plastic connection, it seems to be really nice.

If you get another one, do the basic setup out of the box and don’t connect it to anything. Plug it into your computer and run express. Keep updating it until it doesn’t ask you to update any more. Don’t worry about maps, you can modify them later. I think by default it will only have your region maps loaded anyway (at least it did for NAmerica.) Then go back and connect it to Connect/phone and do that process. Also DO NOT let setup transfer your sensors. Skip that. Then go back and connect everything. If you do, it will name your transferred sensors as numbers letters. It will show the correct icons but it won’t show “wahoo cadence…”, just a bunch of numbers as the descriptions. I deleted all transferred sensors and reinstalled them. Not a big deal but it’s nice to see the proper descriptions. It also did it for my fenix 7

  • I just had a chat with the support. They told me that the FW update will not succeed via GCM and that I'll need GE. But I only have Linux and my mac died 2 weeks ago. So they told me to contact the local distributor... I have a bad feeling about this :(
What I was able to get out from them is that 5.09 does have bluetooth fixes in it.

  • They told me that the FW update will not succeed via GCM and that I'll need GE

That's very odd and unusual, hundreds? of users would be trying to sync via GCM and just expecting to get updates if available and may not go near GE in months? Maybe the BT updates are so low lever that GE is needed.

Regardless I would have expected Garmin to at least posted a topic regarding FW 5.09 in this forum with the update history / changes and additional advice if it had to be installed via GE  , comment please?
